High school roundup for Oct. 25, 2023: Hampton makes Class 3A semis with OT win

Aidan Cole and Coleman Docherty scored as second-seeded Hampton survived a scare in the WPIAL Class 3A boys soccer quarterfinals Wednesday night with a 2-1 double overtime win over No. 7 Thomas Jefferson (15-2). The Talbots (16-2-1) will meet No. 11 Franklin Regional in the semifinals Monday.

Bentworth 5, Sewickley Academy 0 – John Scott had two goals and Ryan Colbert, Ryan Mossner and Bill Moyer also scored as No. 7 Bentworth (16-2) knocked off No. 2 Sewickley Academy (13-3-1) in the Class A quarterfinals. The Bearcats will meet No. 3 Burrell in Monday’s semifinals.

Burrell 2, Trinity Christian 1 – Taber Driscoll scored the winning goal in double overtime for No. 3 Burrell (14-3) in a Class A quarterfinal win over No. 11 Trinity Christian (10-6). Vincent Guerrini also scored for the Bucs and Haydn Herbulock and Luke Guerrini added assists. Ryan Croushore made four saves, including a breakaway stop at the end of regulation. Luke Kost scored for Trinity Christian. Burrell will meet No. 7 Bentworth in Monday’s semifinals.

Charleroi 3, Eden Christian 1 – Dylan Klinger scored two goals and Landon Barcus added another to lead No. 1 Charleroi (18-0) past No. 9 Eden Christian (13-4-2) in a Class A quarterfinal. The Cougars will face No. 4 Seton LaSalle in Monday’s semifinals.

Montour 2, Indiana 1 – No. 5 Montour (15-3) defeated No. 13 Indiana (6-12-1) in a Class 3A quarterfinal matchup. The Spartans will face No. 8 South Fayette in Monday’s semifinals.

Seton LaSalle 5, Springdale 0 – Jack Billick netted four goals, Tyler Kovalcik also scored and Nick Cherry recorded the shutout as No. 4 Seton LaSalle (15-2-1) shut out No. 5 Springdale (14-4) in the Class A quarterfinals. The Rebels will face top-seeded Charleroi in Monday’s semifinals.

Girls volleyball

Armstrong 3, Gateway 0 – No. 6 Armstrong (12-3) swept No. 11 Gateway (9-5), 25-16, 25-9, 25-20, in a Class 3A first-round match. The River Hawks will meet No. 3 Oakland Catholic in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Avonworth 3, Ellwood City 1 – Fifth-seeded Avonworth (13-6) got past No. 12 Ellwood City (13-7), 25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19, in a Class 2A first-round match. The Antelopes will take on No. 4 Southmoreland in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Beaver 3, South Park 0 – Chloe List had 12 kills, 11 digs and two aces and Jaedyn Brown had 10 kills for No. 2 Beaver (17-0) in a Class 2A first-round win over No. 18 South Park (10-10). The Bobcats will face No.10 Burrell in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Burrell 3, Keystone Oaks 0 – The 10th-seeded Bucs (15-3) defeated No. 7 Keystone Oaks (16-3) in a tight three-set match in Class 2A, 30-28, 26-24, 25-23. Burrell will meet No. 2 Beaver in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Freeport 3, Charleroi 0 – Top-seeded Freeport (18-1) opened its Class 2A playoff run in dominant fashion, beating No. 16 Charleroi (12-10), 25-7, 25-7, 25-9. The Yellowjackets will meet No. 9 Shenango in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Hampton 3, Laurel Highlands 0 – The top-seeded Talbots (19-0) began their playoff run with a 25-7, 25-15, 25-9 win over No. 17 laurel Highlands (9-8) in the Class 3A first round. Hampton will meet No. 9 Montour in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Montour 3, Knoch 0 – No. 9 Montour (10-8) swept No. 8 Knoch (13-6) in a Class 3A first-round match, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18. The Spartans will face No. 1 Hampton in the quarterfinals Saturday. Karlee Buterbaugh had six kills, Sabrina Schlott added five blocks and Brynne Smith had eight service points for the Knights.

Neshannock 3, Derry 1 – No. 6 Neshannock (13-3) got past No. 11 Derry (12-5) in a four-set match in the Class 2A first round, 25-13, 25-21, 23-25, 26-24. The Lancers will meet No. 3 Quaker Valley in the quarterfinals Saturday.

North Catholic 3, Indiana 0 – Second-seeded North Catholic (16-1) swept No. 15 Indiana (8-6), 25-17, 25-15, 25-11, in a Class 3A first-round match. North Catholic will take on No. 7 Trinity in the quarterfinals Saturday.Stella Stossel had seven kills and five digs for Indiana. Hannah Cowburn dished out 18 assists and Alexandra Ball had 15 digs.

Oakland Catholic 3, Ringgold 0 – Third-seeded Oakland Catholic (14-3) took care of No. 14 Ringgold (167-4) in a Class 3A first-round match, 25-11, 25-22, 25-14. Oakland Catholic will take on No. 6 Armstrong in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Quaker Valley 3, Fort Cherry 0 – The third-seeded Quakers (15-2) blanked No. 19 Fort Cherry (12-8) in the Class 2A first round, 25-20, 25-15, 25-16. Quaker Valley will face No. 6 Neshannock in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Shenango 3, South Allegheny 2 – No. 9 Shenango (10-5) won a five-setter over No. 8 South Allegheny (13-5), 25-15, 24-26, 25-19, 19-25, 15-8, in the Class 2A first round. The Wildcats will face No. 1 Freeport in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

South Fayette 3, Mars 2 – No. 5 South Fayette (12-5) defeated No. 12 Mars (9-10) in a tightly contested Class 3A first-round match, 25-22, 20-25, 17-25, 25-15, 17-15. The Lions will face No. 4 Thomas Jefferson in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Southmoreland 3, OLSH 2 – Amarah McCutcheon had 12 kills, Makayla Etling added eight kills and Ainsley Martin recorded 10 digs and four aces as No. 4 Southmoreland (19-0) rallied for a five-set win over No. 13 OLSH (13-5) in the Class 2A first round. The Scotties, who won 18-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-18, 15-9, will meet No. 5 Avonworth in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Thomas Jefferson 3, Kiski Area 0 – Fourth-seeded Thomas Jefferson (16-1) swept No. 13 Kiski Area (13-7) in the Class 3A first round, 25-20, 26-24, 25-15. TJ will face No. 5 South Fayette in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Trinity 3, Latrobe 2 – Seventh-seeded Trinity (10-6) outlasted No. 10 Latrobe (11-6) in a five-set thriller, 25-13, 23-25, 27-25, 23-25, 15-10, in the Class 3A first round. The Hillers will take on No. 2 North Catholic in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
