High school roundup for Oct. 3, 2023: Peters Township blanks Norwin in matchup of section contenders

Nathan Froelich scored in the first half and Adam Smiga connected in the second half to lead Peters Township (9-3, 8-3) to a 2-0 victory over Norwin (10-4, 8-3) in a matchup of playoff contenders in Section 2-4A boys soccer Tuesday.

Armstrong 5, Kiski Area 4 – Jordan Callipare scored a hat trick and Jacob Szep had two goals to lead Armstrong (5-8-1, 3-6-1) to a Section 1-3A win. Nate Witt scored a hat trick, Liam Foley added a goal and Austin Beck had four assists for Kiski Area (3-6-1, 3-4-1).

Avonworth 2, Hopewell 1 (OT) – Rowan Carmichael and Nathan Kline scored for Avonworth (10-2-1, 9-1) in a Section 4-2A win over Hopewell (6-5, 4-5).

Beaver 11, Ellwood City 0 – Evan Baker, Isaac Miller, Anton Kuespert, Porter Oberg, Jack Goettman, Seth Kullen, Anthony Furda, Klayton Kaunert and Joe Mollura scored for Beaver (8-4, 7-3) in a Section 4-2A win over Ellwood City (0-9, 0-9).

Belle Vernon 10, Brownsville 0 – Trevor Kovatch scored seven times, tying his own school record for goals in a game and setting a new single-season school record for goals in a season with 40 for Belle Vernon (11-2, 10-1) in a Section 3-2A win over Brownsville (0-13, 0-11). Jackson Coneybeer scored two goals and Logan Metzger scored one for the Leopards.The single-season goals record was 37, set by Markello Apodiakos.

Beth-Center 8, California 1 – Nekoda Bundy scored five goals while Parker Amos, Joseph Garrett and Jordan Lowman each chipped in a goal to lead Beth-Center (9-5, 4-4) to a Section 2-A win. Darryl Ray scored for California (3-8, 1-6).

Bethel Park 5, Albert Gallatin 0 – Xavier Jackson, Henry Gaston, Ethan Varley, Adam Thompson and Ali Yasin scored for Bethel Park (12-1-1, 10-0-1) in a Section 3-3A win over Albert Gallatin (2-11, 1-10).

Blackhawk 3, Ambridge 0 – Isaiah Etheridge, Matias Huber and Aiden Terry scored and Robert Kelly made nine saves to preserve the shutout for Blackhawk (3-12, 1-10) against Ambridge (1-13-1, 1-9-1) in Section 2-3A.

Burrell 2, Riverview 0 – Cam Wagner and Taber Driscoll scored and Ryan Croushore recorded the shutout as Burrell (11-1, 9-1) defeated Riverview (4-8, 2-7) in Section 3-A. Vincent Guerrini and Hadyn Herbulock dished out assists.

Butler 2, Central Catholic 1 – Cody Lubinsky scored both goals for Butler (10-2-2, 7-2-1) in a Section 1-4A win over Central Catholic (5-8, 4-7).

Charleroi 2, Bentworth 1 – Jacob Chambers and Dylan Klinger scored a goal apiece to lead Charleroi (13-0, 8-0) past Bentworth (10-2, 6-2) in a Section 2-A win. Andrew Vipperman scored for the Bearcats.

Chartiers-Houston 4, Brentwood 1 – Addison Hancq had two goals and Juan Melena and Braulio Melena also scored for Chartiers-Houston (2-12, 1-7) in a Section 4-A win. Carlos Duran scored for Brentwood (1-9, 1-7).

Deer Lakes 14, Derry 0 – Peyton Kushon and Collin Rodgers had hat tricks and Jake Orseno scored twice to lead Deer Lakes (11-2, 10-1) past Derry (2-11, 2-9) in Section 2-2A. Zane Spense and Cuyler Crim each had a goal and two assists and Larry Rommes, Brayan Sanabria, Nolan Lewitag and Noah Shurina also scored.

Elizabeth Forward 3, East Allegheny 0 – Ethan Childers scored two goals and Luca Valerio added one for Elizabeth Forward (7-4-1, 6-4-1) in a Section 1-2A win over East Allegheny (9-2-1, 8-2-1).

Gateway 3, Franklin Regional 2 – James LoCoco scored twice, including the game-winner on a penalty with about six minutes to play, to lift Gateway (7-3-2, 7-2-2) to a Section 4-3A win. Owen Echegaray gave Gateway a 1-0 lead. Noah Walker and Joey Bayne scored to give Franklin Regional (8-5, 7-4) a 2-1 advantage. Jack Kweder made 14 saves for the Gators.

Hampton 9, Highlands 0 – Luke Fiscus, Coleman Docherty and Hudson Struble scored two goals apiece as Hampton (11-1-1, 9-0-1) shut out Highlands (2-10, 0-9) in Section 1-3A. Xavier Ware, Conner Killmeyer and Cole Stapleton also scored for the Talbots.

Knoch 6, Greensburg Salem 0 – Anthony Lajevic scored twice while Mason Nebel, Sam Caldwell and Kannon Trofimuk each added a goal as Knoch (8-7, 8-3) shut out Greensburg Salem (5-8, 4-7) in Section 2-2A.

Ligonier Valley 11, Geibel Catholic 4 – Michael Vargulish-Graver scored four goals and Zach Smykal had a hat trick to lead Ligonier Valley (3-8-1) to a nonsection win over Geibel Catholic (0-5).

McGuffey 1, Yough 0 – Nate Kler scored the winning goal to lead McGuffey (11-3, 9-2) past Yough (7-6-1, 6-5) in Section 3-2A.

Montour 3, Chartiers Valley 1 – Jaxon Camp scored two goals and Andrew Prunier added another as Montour (10-2, 10-1) bested Chartiers Valley (4-7, 4-5) in Section 2-3A.

Moon 2, South Fayette 1 (OT) – Mike Walenchok scored the game-winner in the second overtime and Davi Jansson had a goal and an assist for Moon (11-2-1, 9-0-1) in a Section 2-3A win over South Fayette (7-2-3, 6-2-3).

Mt. Lebanon 6, Hempfield 1 – Noah Defeo had two goals and Isaac Hrivnak, Victor Slack, Ian McEwen and Alec Huber also scored for Mt. Lebanon (6-7-1, 6-4-1) in a Section 2-4A win. Francisco Lopez Diaz scored for Hempfield (0-12, 0-10).

Mt. Pleasant 7, Southmoreland 0 – Aiden Johnson collected three goals and an assist and Luke Rivardo scored twice as Mt. Pleasant (10-2, 10-1) blanked Southmoreland (3-10, 2-9) in Section 3-2A. Luke Domasky, Zach Livingston and Grant Zahrobsky also scored and Jacob McGuinness and Tyler Kurtz combined on the shutout.

Penn Hills 1, Penn-Trafford 0 – Mack Byrnes scored the decisive goal as Penn Hills (5-7-1, 3-7-1) shut out Penn-Trafford (4-9-2, 3-6-2) in Section 4-3A.

Ringgold 5, Laurel Highlands 2 – Owen Haywood and Nick Evans each scored two goals and Izaiah Wilson added a goal as Ringgold (11-2, 9-2) beat Laurel Highlands (4-9, 2-9) in Section 3-3A.

Seton LaSalle 2, Serra Catholic 0 – Sal Pasquale and Tyler Kovalcik scored for Seton LaSalle (10-1-1, 7-1) in a Section 4-A win over Serra Catholic (9-2, 7-1).

Shady Side Academy 10, Leechburg 1 – Amir Awais scored four goals and Drew McKim and Mark Bence added two each to help Shady Side Academy (10-1, 9-1) past Leechburg (0-11, 0-10) in Section 2-2A.

Springdale 3, Winchester Thurston 0 – Billy Lawrence had a goal and an assist and John Duku and John Fitzgerald also scored for Springdale (9-2, 8-2) in a Section 3-A win over Winchester Thurston (6-3-2, 5-3).

Thomas Jefferson 2, Trinity 1 – Brayden Miller scored both goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift Thomas Jefferson (11-2-1, 9-1-1) past Trinity (6-5, 6-5) in Section 3-3A. Jacob Jahn scored for the Hillers.

Upper St. Clair 1, Canon-McMillan 0 – Joe Donnelly scored on a free kick in overtime to give Upper St. Clair (12-1, 10-1) the Section 2-4A win over Canon-McMillan (6-6-1, 6-4-1).

Girls soccer

Oakland Catholic 2, Indiana 0 – Corinna Martella scored both goals and Nica Folino recorded the shutout for Oakland Catholic (5-5-1, 5-3-1) in a Section 1-3A win over Indiana (3-9, 2-7).

Field hockey

Fox Chapel 2, Winchester Thurston 0 – Emma Srodes and Annie Mohn scored and Gina Fitzsimmons recorded the shutout as Fox Chapel picked up a nonsection win.

Latrobe 5, Ellis School 0 – Nina Scalise had two goals and Sara Blossey, Julia Macey and Mia Stynchula also scored to help Latrobe to a nonsection victory.

Penn-Trafford 5, Aquinas Academy 1 – Ava Hershberger had three goals and two assists to lead Penn-Trafford to a nonsection win. Caeley Simon and Mackenzie Keenan also scored and Phoebe Gross and Liz Welsh recorded assists.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Shenango 0 – Chloe List had 15 kills and 10 digs, Kailyn Connelly had eight kills and Zoe Ringer had 34 assists to lead Beaver (11-0, 9-0) to a three-set sweep of Shenango (5-4, 5-4) in Section 1-2A. Aubrey Bumblis had 21 digs and Lanie Malobabich had a season-high eight kills for the Bobcats.

Canon-McMillan 3, West Allegheny 1 – Natalie Carr had 10 kills, nine digs and three aces, Abby Tucker had 10 kills and Olivia Gross had 16 assists as Canon-McMillan (9-2, 6-0) beat West Allegheny (2-8, 2-6) in nonsection play. Julia Murdy led the Big Macs with 12 digs.

Derry 3, Ligonier Valley 0 – Emily Berkhimer had seven kills, Haylee Nyers followed with four and Alayna Williams and Tori Hutchison each had three kills to lead Derry (8-2, 8-1) to a sweep of Ligonier Valley (4-8, 2-7) in Section 5-2A. Kayla Enos had three aces and Regan Repak had 23 assists for the Trojans.

Franklin Regional 3, Highlands 0 – Sophia Reitz had 14 kills and Brooke Feorene had 20 digs to lead Franklin Regional (5-6, 4-4) to a Section 5-3A victory over Highlands (0-11, 0-8).

Hampton 3, Plum 1 – Taylor Frankel and Payton Galietti each had 10 kills and Allison Schepner and Emma Rick added eight kills apiece to lead Hampton to a Section 1-3A win. Avery Koontz had 25 digs, Emma Rick contributed 21 digs and Lilly Muczinski had 40 assists.

Knoch 3, Lincoln Park 0 – Avery Adams had 13 service points and Brynne Smith added nine while Sabrina Schlott finished with four blocks as Knoch (10-4, 6-2) defeated Lincoln Park (1-9, 0-5) in Section 4-3A.

Mapletown 3, California 2 – Bailey Rafferty had four kills, 22 digs, 33 assists and five blocks to lead Mapletown (7-4, 5-4) to a Section 2-A win against California (6-3, 6-2). Devan Clark had 27 digs, Treslee Weston had 13 kills and Bri Ashton had four aces for the Maples. Azzy Colditz led California with 20 assists, three kills, four aces and three blocks. Raegan Gillen had 15 kills and Nina Conte added 12 kills.

Penn-Trafford 3, Hempfield 2 – Elle Visco had 15 kills and Kylie Anthony added 14 to lead Penn-Trafford (7-2, 5-0) to a Section 3-4A win. Kamryn Pieper had seven blocks, Ella Dindak dished out 45 assists, and Maci Hohman had 24 digs for the Warriors. Zoey Hopkins had 24 assists and 17 digs, Preslee Horchak had 18 assists, and Sarah Podkul had 27 digs for Hempfield (4-7, 3-2). Ashley Hosni had 13 kills and four aces and Jillian Sowers had 15 digs for the Spartans.

Southmoreland 3, Bentworth 0 – Amarah McCutcheon had nine kills and five blocks and Kaylee Doppelhuer added eight kills and four blocks as Southmoreland improved to 13-0 with a Section 3-2A win.

St. Joseph 3, Riverview 0 – Kate Giannetta had 12 service points and Kalyda O’Connor had 11 service points while Emma Swierczewski had four kills as St. Joseph (9-3, 5-2) swept Riverview (1-11, 0-8) in Section 4-1A.

Hockey

Bethel Park 3, Canon-McMillan 2 – Will Alborg, Kylan Bedner and Ethan Cooley scored as Bethel Park (1-0) defeated Canon-McMillan (0-1) in Class 3A. Brenden Lomago and Ben Votodian scored for the Big Macs.

Cathedral Prep 1, Seneca Valley 0 – Matthias Sprickman scored the lone goal and Tanner Bell made 20 saves for the shutout as Cathedral Prep (1-0) beat Seneca Valley (0-1) in Class 3A.

Penn-Trafford 5, Norwin 4 – Robert Thatcher scored the tying goal with 2:02 left in regulation as Penn-Trafford (1-0) won via shootout in Class 2A. Marco Ferraccio scored twice for the Warriors. Alex Thomas had a hat trick for Norwin (0-1).
