High school roundup for Sept. 13, 2023: North Allegheny breaks 2nd-half tie to stay unbeaten

Abigail Stager’s second goal of the game broke a second-half tie to send North Allegheny to a 4-3 victory over Fox Chapel in Section 1-4A girls soccer Wednesday night.

Jadyn Coy and Gracie Strzempek also scored for the Tigers (8-0, 5-0). Taylor Wilkinson and Kate Friday scored for the Foxes (5-2, 3-2).

Beaver 7, Ambridge 1 – Ana Hahn and Lilia Battalini scored two goals apiece for Beaver (3-2, 2-2) in a Section 1-2A win over Ambridge (1-4, 1-4). Marina Hahn, Sydney Chontos and Jocy Biela also scored for the Bobcats.

Belle Vernon 2, Ringgold 2 – Ava Scalise scored the tying goal in the second half and Courtney Martin also had a goal for Belle Vernon (2-4-1, 1-3-1) in a Section 2-3A draw. Elizabeth Wilson and Imani Arnold scored for Ringgold (3-3-2, 2-2-1).

Burrell 3, Knoch 2 – Mikayla Coury, Tessa Mathabel and Mikaya Buchak scored to lead Burrell (5-1, 2-1) to a Section 2-2A win. Kam Burtner and Lauren Bowser scored for Knoch (3-3, 2-1).

Butler 8, Shaler 1 – Leah Weiland had a hat trick and Ella Rekich added two goals to lead Butler (4-3, 3-2) past Shaler (2-4, 1-4) in a Section 1-4A win. Jessica Calhoun and Lucia Leyland scored their first varsity goal of the season for the Tornados.

Canon-McMillan 8, Hempfield 0 – Jenna Gasper had a hat trick for Canon-McMillan (3-3-1, 3-1-1) in a Section 2-4A win over Hempfield (1-6, 0-5). Abby Ault, Morgan Dyer, Kyleigh Clutter, Ella Shields and Sarah Warzinski also scored for the Big Macs.

Chartiers-Houston 7, Monessen 1 – Ava Capozzoli scored four goals while Ali Wingard, Amelia Brose and Mia Reddix each added a goal for Chartiers-Houston (7-1, 4-1) in a Section 2-A win over Monessen (1-4-1, 0-3-1) Kayla Saeli scored for the Greyhounds.

Connellsville 7, Uniontown 2 – Grace Bosnic scored a hat trick, Emma Tikey added a pair of goals, and Makayla Hay and Rylee Leasher also scored as Connellsville (4-4, 3-2) beat Uniontown (3-4, 0-3) in Section 2-3A.

Deer Lakes 8, Apollo-Ridge 1 – Bryanna Simonetti had a hat trick and Claire Cacurak and Kylie McCoy each scored twice to lead Deer Lakes (3-3-2, 1-2) past Apollo-Ridge (1-3, 1-3) in Section 2-2A. Brittany Schindler also scored for the Lancers.

Quaker Valley 1, Central Valley 0 – Annabel Miko scored the winning goal to lead Quaker Valley (5-1, 3-1) to a Section 1-2A victory over Central Valley (2-5-1, 2-2).

Greensburg Central Catholic 14, Serra Catholic 1 – Riley Kerr scored six goals and had two assists and Jiana Paterson had a hat trick for Greensburg Central Catholic (3-1, 3-1) in a Section 1-A win over Serra Catholic (2-3, 2-3). Sophia Fisher added two goals for the Centurions.

Mars 5, Indiana 0 – Addi Girdwood had a hat trick and added an assist to lead Mars (6-0, 4-0) to a Section 1-3A victory over Indiana (2-6, 1-4). Liv Halliday had a goal and an assist, Rosie Pellegrino also scored, and Kate McEnroe and Lily Goodworth combined on the shutout.

Montour 2, Trinity 0 – Riley Hall and Mckenzie Hall scored while Allison Armitage recorded the shutout to lead Montour (4-0-2, 3-0-1) past Trinity (0-6, 0-4) in Section 4-3A.

Mt. Pleasant 9, Woodland Hills 0 – Morgan Gesinski and Maggie Piper each recorded a hat trick and Riley Gesinski added two goals as Mt. Pleasant (4-2, 2-0) blanked Woodland Hills (2-2, 1-2) in Section 3-2A. Laurel Rummel recorded the shutout for the Vikings.

North Catholic 4, Hopewell 0 – Simone Sharpless had a hat trick and Rylee Roccon also scored to lead North Catholic (4-2, 3-1) past Hopewell (0-5, 0-5) in Section 1-2A.

Norwin 2, Baldwin 1 — Alexa Kobus and Evelyn Moore scored while Gabby Schoemer and Lindsey Reese recorded assists for Norwin (2-5, 2-3) in a Section 2-4A win over Baldwin (2-5, 0-5).

Penn-Trafford 6, Greensburg Salem 1 – Emma Stovar and Jess Gadagno each had two goals while Eilish Connolly and Chloe Walton also scored as Penn-Trafford (6-1, 3-1) defeated Greensburg Salem (2-5-1, 1-4) in Section 3-3A.

Peters Township 4, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Julia Spergel and Cam Klein each had a goal and an assist, Marina Hajnosz and Milena Gill also scored, and Molly Kubistek registered the shutout for Peters Township (6-0-1, 4-0-1) in a Section 2-4A win over Mt. Lebanon (5-3, 3-3).

Pine-Richland 3, Allderdice 0 – Lily DeJesus had two goals and an assist, Carly Hoover also scored, and Shea Best made four saves to record the shutout as Pine-Richland (1-6, 1-4) beat Allderdice (2-3, 2-3) in Section 1-4A.

Plum 7, Penn Hills 2 – Ava Weleski and Gia Babilon scored two goals apiece for Plum (4-0-1, 4-0) in a Section 3-3A win. Kali Booker scored both goals for Penn Hills (1-5, 0-5). Serena Carnahan, Gianna Revetta and Mia Nardo also scored for the Mustangs.

Riverview 12, Jeannette 0 – Lola Abraham collected four goals and an assist to lead Riverview (5-1, 4-1) over Jeannette (0-4-1, 0-3) in Section 1-A. Cailey Trosch scored twice, Mary Quinlan had a goal and three assists Hannah Hudack a goal and two assists and Katerina Tsambis a goal and an assist for the Raiders.

Seton LaSalle 9, Carrick 0 – Catie Kozel and Angelina McGrath scored two goals apiece for Seton LaSalle (2-3) in a nonsection win over Carrick (0-3).

Shady Side Academy 3, Keystone Oaks 0 – Caroline Liptak had a goal and an assist and Sarah Kushnir and Lucille McCargo also scored to power Shady Side Academy (4-2, 2-1) past Keystone Oaks (4-3, 2-1) in Section 4-2A.

South Park 9, McGuffey 1 – Madelynn Serechin scored two goals for South Park (5-1, 3-0) in a Section 4-2A win over McGuffey (2-3, 1-2). Brooke Paylo, Alicia Riberich, Arianna Beck, Hayley Bennett, Avery Rispoli, Addi Kerr and Taylor Vargo also scored for the Eagles.

Springdale 9, Steel Valley 0 – Hailey Marchlewski had a hat trick and added an assist and Briana Ross collected a goal and four assists to lead Springdale (5-0, 4-0) to a Section 1-A win over Steel Valley (1-8, 1-3). Molly Hurley had a goal and an assist, Lacey Shondeck, Charli McClafferty, Brooke Taliani and Ariana Feizi also scored, and Ashley Ross had a pair of assists.

Upper St. Clair 2, Bethel Park 0 – Sierra Dupre scored both Upper St. Clair (7-0, 5-0) goals in a Section 2-4A win over Bethel Park (4-3-1, 3-3).

Waynesburg 2, Charleroi 1 – Ella Miller and Lake Litwinovich scored as Waynesburg (5-2, 3-2) served Charleroi (5-1, 3-1) its first loss of the year in a Section 2-A match. McKenna DeUnger scored for the Cougars.

West Allegheny 1, Chartiers Valley 0 – Ella Smith scored on a helper from Chloe Hart while Alicia Alwine and Ally Frueh combined on the shutout for West Allegheny (5-3, 3-2) in a win over Chartiers Valley (3-4, 1-3) in Section 4-3A.

West Mifflin 9, Brownsville 0 – Jada Downs scored four goals and Caroline Chelosky added a hat trick as West Mifflin (3-3, 1-2) shut out Brownsville (0-6, 0-3) in Section 4-2A.

Yough 5, East Allegheny 0 – Kate Slavick, Carli Reisinger, Erin Reisinger, Jesse Dermata and Brooke Wieland scored for Yough (3-4, 2-1) in a Section 3-2A shutout against East Allegheny (0-4, 0-3).

Girls tennis

Section 1-3A – Penn-Trafford sophomore Mia Williams took her first step toward repeating as WPIAL Class 3A champion, but a tough test awaits in the section finals Thursday. Williams advanced to the championship match without dropping a game in three matches. Her opponent, second-seeded senior Ellen Liu of Franklin Regional, did the same. Williams beat Franklin Regional’s Michelle Yan in the semifinals. Liu topped Kiski Area’s Ambur Orowitz. The top four finishers advance to the WPIAL tournament in Class 3A.

Section 2-3A – Third-seeded Lacticia Tici-Wessel of North Allegheny outlasted second-seeded Elinor Kim of North Hills, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, in three sets to reach the section finals. She will meet top-seeded Caroline Prisk of Pine-Richland, who stormed into the championship match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over fifth-seeded Kylie Staudt of Seneca Valley in the semis.

Section 3-3A – Shady Side Academy freshman Meriwether McCargo took the section tournament by storm, rolling to the finals without dropping a game. She will meet Baldwin senior Gabrielle Moder in Thursday’s finals. Modor, the third seed, got past second-seeded freshman Mollie Sclichter of Oakland Catholic, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals. McCargo topped fifth-seeded senior Abby Santoro of Oakland Catholic in the semifinals.

Section 4-3A – A freshman will meet a senior in the section finals Thursday when Bethel Park ninth grader Cami Fischer takes on Mt. Lebanon 12th grader Sophia Cunningham. Fischer got past Mt. Lebanon’s Jackie Tang in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-0. Cunningham survived a three-set battle with Bethel Park’s Lily Sierka, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Section 1-2A – Greensburg Central Catholic junior Sasha Hoffman rolled to the section finals, losing a total of one game in three matches. She will meet third-seeded senior Danielle Dominick of Derry, a 6-3, 6-1 winner over second-seeded Anna Buterbaugh of Indiana in the semifinals. Hoffman beat Indiana’s Tess Kuzneski, 6-1, 6-0, in the semis. The top three finishers in Class 2A advance to the WPIAL tournament.

Section 2-2A – A pair of super sophomores will meet for the section title when top-seeded Gabriella Dusi of Belle Vernon meets second-seeded Grace Kempton of South Park. Dusi defeated Raelle Wilshire of Chartiers Valley in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-1. Kempton topped Ava Frank of Avella, 6-0, 6-1.

Section 3-2A – The top two seeds will square off for the section title Thursday. Top-seeded Grace Stitt advanced to the championship match with a straight sets win over Alexandra Taylor of Aquinas Academy, 6-2, 6-1. Second-seeded Katie Hardy of North Catholic won a semifinal battle with third-seeded Jade Nether of Knoch, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Section 4-2A – Third-seeded Gwyneth Belt of Sewickley Academy won a closely contested semifinal over second-seeded Rachel Hardek of Central Valley, 7-5, 7-5, to reach the section finals. Belt will face top seed Chloe DeSanzo of Beaver, who defeated Maria Sirianni of Sewickley Academy, 6-2, 6-3, in the other semi.

Section 5-2A – Top-seeded Cecilia Gurgel of Winchester Thurston marched into the section finals without dropping a game. She will face second-seeded Peja Cruise, a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Thesere Bernas of OLSH in the semifinals. Gurgel defeated Quaker Valley’s Jay Olawaiye in the semis.
