High school roundup for Sept. 18, 2023: Peters Township gets past Upper St. Clair in battle of girls soccer unbeatens

Julia Spergel scored early in the first half and Peters Township (7-0-1, 5-0-1) made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over Upper St. Clair (7-1, 5-1) in a matchup of unbeaten teams in Section 2-4A girls soccer Monday night. Cam Klein assisted on the winning goal, which was the first Upper St. Clair has given up this season.

Avonworth 8, Ambridge 0 – Gianna Babusci recorded a hat trick and Minah Syam had a goal and two assists to lead Avonworth (7-0-2, 5-0) past Ambridge (1-5, 1-5) in Section 1-2A.

Beaver 1, Quaker Valley 1 – Ana Hahn scored for Beaver (4-2-1, 2-2-1) and Annabelle Miko scored for Quaker Valley (4-1-1, 2-1-1) in a Section 1-2A draw.

Belle Vernon 5, Uniontown 0 – Grace West had two goals and two assists and Ava Scalise added a goal and two assists to help Belle Vernon (3-4-1, 1-4-1) past Uniontown (3-6, 0-5) in Section 2-3A. Kataira Rhodes had a goal and an assist, Chessa Mertz also scored, and Abby Showman recorded the shutout, including a save on a penalty kick.

Butler 2, Fox Chapel 1 – Leah Deal and Sydney Patterson scored for Butler (5-3, 4-2) in a Section 1-4A win over Fox Chapel (5-3, 3-3).

Canon-McMillan 2, Bethel Park 0 – Jenna Gasper and Audrey Calgaro scored to lead Canon-McMillan (4-3-1, 4-1-1) past Bethel Park (4-4-1, 3-4) in Section 2-4A.

Charleroi 4, South Allegheny 2 – McKenna DeUnger had a hat trick and Bella Carroto added a goal to lead Charleroi (7-1, 4-1) to a Section 2-A win. Ava Ellwood and Abigail Allan each scored a goal for South Allegheny (6-2, 3-2).

Deer Lakes 9, Valley 0 – Bryanna Simonetti and Claire Cacurak each had a hat trick for Deer Lakes (4-3-2, 2-2) in a Section 2-2A win over Valley (1-4-1, 0-4). Lexie Lollo, Addison Sagi and Helena Hagner also scored for the Lancers.

Freeport 2, Knoch 2 – Samantha Liput and Peyton Los scored for Freeport (6-0-1, 4-0-1) and Emma Slusser and Bella Oskin scored for Knoch (3-3-2, 2-1-1) in a Section 2-2A draw.

Gateway 2, Greensburg Salem 0 – Hayden Price scored both goals for Gateway (2-3-1, 2-3) in a Section 3-3A win over Greensburg Salem (2-6-1, 1-5).

Greensburg Central Catholic 11, Steel Valley 0 – Riley Kerr had five goals and two assists and Gianna Patterson had a hat trick for Greensburg Central Catholic (4-1, 4-1) in a Section 1-A win over Steel Valley (1-9, 1-4). Sophia Fisher scored two goals and Addison Vacanti added one for the Centurions.

Hampton 7, Armstrong 0 – Kendal Hoolahan had a hat trick and Sara Kenst and Emma Langer added two goals apiece to lead Hampton (6-1, 4-1) to a Section 1-3A win over Armstrong (2-6, 2-4).

Keystone Oaks 5, McGuffey 0 – Becca Simon had a pair of goals and Emma Mathie, Aly Simon and Maddie Arment also scored to lead Keystone Oaks (5-3, 2-1) past McGuffey (2-4, 1-3) in Section 4-2A. Zoie Bout recorded the shutout.

Mars 1, Kiski Area 0 – Rosie Pellegrino scored, Julia Lishia dished out an assist, and Kate McEnroe recorded the shutout as Mars (7-0, 5-0) got past Kiski Area (3-5-1, 2-2-1) in Section 1-3A.

Mohawk 6, South Side 2 – Elizabeth Whippo had a hat trick, Audrey Whippo added a pair of goals, and Taylor Logan also scored to lead Mohawk (3-3, 1-3) past South Side (0-6, 0-4) in Section 3-A.

Monessen 6, Beth-Center 2 – Samantha Saylor scored five goals and Regan Cribbins added one to lead Monessen (2-4-1, 1-3-1) past Beth-Center (1-6, 0-5) in a Section 2-A win.

Montour 5, Chartiers Valley 0 – Mia Cyanovich, Riley Hall, Annabelle Titus, Kira Hobbs and Grace Bannon scored a goal apiece to lead Montour (6-0-2, 4-0-1) to a Section 4-3A win over Chartiers Valley (3-5, 1-4).

Moon 2, Blackhawk 0 – Elizabeth Gallup and Syd Felton scored to lead Moon (7-1-1, 4-1-1) to a Section 4-3A win over Blackhawk (4-5, 2-3).

Mt. Lebanon 2, Norwin 1 — Casey Gorman scored a pair of goals to carry Mt. Lebanon (6-3, 4-3) to a Section 2-4A win. Evelyn Moore scored for Norwin (2-6, 2-4).

Mt. Pleasant 11, Yough 0 – Maddie Barrick scored four goals, Morgan Gesinski recorded six assists, and Riley Gesinski added a pair of goals to lead Mt. Pleasant (5-2, 3-0) past Yough (3-6, 2-2) in Section 3-2A.

North Allegheny 2, Allderdice 0 – Abigail Stager and Allyson Ruiz scored to lead North Allegheny (9-0, 6-0) past allderdice (2-4, 2-4) in Section 1-4A.

North Catholic 3, Central Valley 0 – Simone Sharpless had a goal and an assist, Rylee Roccon and Lilly Karsman also scored, and Mikaela Canzian recorded the shutout for North Catholic (5-2, 4-1) in a Section 1-2A win over Central Valley (2-6-1, 2-3).

Oakland Catholic 9, Obama Academy 0 – Corinna Martella and Emma Gompers had two goals apiece for Oakland Catholic (3-3-1, 3-1-1) in a Section 1-3A win over Obama Academy (0-6,0-5). Nica Folino and Izzie Gallo combined for the shutout for the Eagles.

Pine-Richland 5, North Hills 1 – Five players scored for Pine-Richland (2-6, 2-4) in a Section 1-4A win over North Hills (0-7, 0-6). Lily DeJesus, Molly Baker, Riley White, Abby Santina and Charlie Ozelski found the net for the Rams.

Seneca Valley 8, Shaler 0 – Ayla Ward scored four goals for Seneca Valley (8-0, 6-0) in a Section 1-4A win over Shaler (3-5, 1-5). Ashlee Libby, Karly Majeski, Addison Shank and Kailee George also scored for the Raiders.

South Fayette 8, Trinity 0 – Julianna Rossi and Emily Sinton each had a hat trick and Mia Deramo and Quinn Miller added a goal apiece to lead South Fayette (4-4-1, 3-2) to a Section 4-3A win over Trinity (0-7, 0-5).

South Park 11, Brownsville 0 – Reagan Love had a hat trick to help South Park (6-1, 4-0) past Brownsville (0-8, 0-4) in Section 4-2A. Aliana Barbara, Madison Stanton, Alicia Riberich, Brooke Paylo, Bella DeRenzo, Avery Rispoli, Ella Voyten and Arianna Beck also scored.

Southmoreland 12, East Allegheny 0 – Megan Mehall scored four goals, Aubrey Seder had a hat trick, and Ashley Sedar added two for Southmoreland (5-2, 4-0) in a Section 3-2A win over East Allegheny (0-5, 0-4). Addison Jordan, Caylin Raymond and Mylee Street also scored for the Scotties.

Springdale 13, Jeannette 1 – Briana Ross netted five goals while Hailey Marchlewski and Makenna Haas scored two each for Springdale (6-0, 5-0) in a Section 1-A win over Jeannette (0-5-1, 0-4). Molly Hurley, Kai Williams, Ashley Ross and Makayla Haus also scored for the Dynamos.

Thomas Jefferson 2, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Natalie Lamenza and Abby Ngugi scored for Thomas Jefferson (7-1, 6-0) in a Section 2-3A win over Elizabeth Forward (4-2, 4-1).

West Allegheny 3, Hopewell 0 – Chloe Hart scored two goals and Addie Roberts added one to lead West Allegheny (6-3) to a nonsection win over Hopewell (0-6).

Woodland Hills 11, Ligonier Valley 0 – Isabella Caldwell and Olivia Wilson each had a hat trick for Woodland Hills (3-3, 2-2) in a Section 3-2A win over Ligonier Valley (0-7, 0-4).

Boys soccer

Elizabeth Forward 5, South Allegheny 0 – Hugo Davila-Sanz and William Sinay scored twice and Luca Valerio had a goal and an assist as Elizabeth Forward (5-2-1, 4-2-1) beat South Allegheny (1-8-1, 0-7) in Section 1-2A.

Plum 6, Penn Hills 0 – Six players scored as Plum (8-1, 7-0) defeated Penn Hills (2-5-1, 1-5-1) in Section 4-3A. Gage Adinolfi, Brady French, Tristan Ralph, Chance Stezoski, Fedgy Fertil and Jebish Pius found the net for the Mustangs.

Field hockey

North Allegheny 11, Allderdice 0 – Josie Schomburg had a hat trick, Addison Burns added a pair of goals, and Kayla Joyce and Emily Vichek combined on the shutout in a Section 3A win for North Allegheny.

Pine-Richland 6, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Madeline Mill scored three times and Jess Albertson contributed a pair of goals for Pine-Richland in a Section 3A win over Mt. Lebanon.

Boys golf

Section 1-3A – Penn-Trafford’s Nick Turowski, the 2021 WPIAL Class 3A champ, won a section title Monday at Manor Valley, shooting a 2-under 70. He was followed by three Indiana golfers – Ryan Bell (71), Trevor Todd (72) and Harrison Martineau (73). Penn-Trafford’s David Newsom and Indiana’s Caden Force also qualified for the WPIAL Class 3A tournament, which begins next Monday at Latrobe Country Club.

Section 4-3A – Plum junior Wes Lorish captured a section title with a 3-over 75 at Meadowink GC. He was followed by a duo from Franklin Regional, Dylan Mauser (76) and Liam Copeland (77) and Plum teammate Tim Pease (78).

Section 2-2A – Jake Kratzenburg shot a 7-over 77 at Greensburg CC to win the section title and lead a contingent of five Greensburg Central Catholic qualifiers for the WPIAL Class 2A tournament, which begins next Monday at Willowbrook CC.

Section 4-2A – OLSH sophomore Jonah Schollaert shot 2-over par 73 to win medalist honors by six shots at Indian Run Golf Club. Other qualifiers were: Alan Tarolli (Fort Cherry), Eion Tiernan (Keystone Oaks), John Dolan (Seton LaSalle), Manny Enos (Burgettstown), Ethan McGrath (Keystone Oaks), Walker Sherwin (Fort Cherry) and Jeremy Wagner (Keystone Oaks).

Section 8-2A – Frazier’s Nixen Erdely took a two-shot win at Cedarbrook’s Red Course with an even-par 71. He was followed by a pair of Belle Vernon golfers, Seth Tomalski and Rogan Maloney, and Uniontown’s Logan Voytish at 73.

Freeport 211, Burrell 227 – Burrell’s Tucker Bitar made a hole-in-one on the 119-yard 17th hole at River Forest CC en route to a nine-hole score of 34. Freeport won the match, led by a 41 from Cam Zigo, to finish its Section 1-2A schedule at 14-0 for the second straight season.

Volleyball

Albert Gallatin 3, Waynesburg 0 – Leah Myers had eight kills, Mya Glisan had five kills, and Mia Myers had eight assists and five kills for Albert Gallatin in a nonsection win over Waynesburg.

Canon-McMillan 3, Baldwin 0 – Natalie Carr had 11 kills, seven digs and three aces and Abby Tucker had eight kills for Canon-McMillan in a Section 2-4A win over Baldwin.

Indiana 3, Highlands 0 – Stella Stossel had nine aces and four kills, Taylor Wood had four kills and three blocks, and Hannah Cowburn had 20 assists, two digs and a block for Indiana in a Section 5-3A win over Highlands.

Knoch 3, Penn Hills 0 – Karlee Buterbaugh had 11 kills and Sierra Mock added six kills to lead Knoch to a nonsection win. Brynne Smith had 29 service points and 13 aces. CeCe Kosecki added nine service points.

Mapletown 3, Fort Cherry 0 – Treslee Weston had nine kills and Miranda Wise and Isabella Garnek each had five kills apiece for Mapletown in a nonsection win over Fort Cherry.

Southmoreland 3, Frazier 2 – Taylor Doppelheuer had 13 kills, Riley Puckey dished out 13 assists, and Ainsley Martin recorded 12 digs to lead Southmoreland to a nonsection win.
