High school roundup for Sept. 19, 2023: Nothing settled when unbeaten North Allegheny, Seneca Valley meet

North Allegheny and Seneca Valley came into Tuesday night’s Section 1 showdown as the only undefeated teams in WPIAL Class 4A boys soccer.

They left the same way.

Arnav Patel scored for North Allegheny and Tyler Prex buried the equalizer for Seneca Valley as the teams played to a 1-1 draw.

Patel scored in the second minute for the Tigers (9-0-1, 6-0-1).

“It was a fair result,” North Allegheny coach Manuel Montero said. “I think Seneca had a good game. I thought we had a good game. Both teams deserved to win. Both teams deserved to lose. … You just put a pin into the next game.”

Prex converted a penalty kick with 31:22 left in regulation to tie it.

“This was two teams that were on a roll,” Seneca Valley coach George Williams said. “They had a lot of good chances. We had a lot of good chances. Neither team could quite get an edge.”

The teams will meet again Oct. 12 at Seneca Valley.

Armstrong 9, Carrick 1 – Jordan Callipare had three goals and two assists, and Hunter Reed added two goals and three assists to lead Armstrong (4-3-1, 2-3-1) to a nonsection win. Martin Jocaille, Miles Stockdill, Tyler Sanders and Joey Kachur also scored.

Beaver 3, Riverside 0 – Kyle Carlson had a pair of goals and Anton Kuespert also scored to propel Beaver (4-2, 4-2) to a Section 4-2A win over Riverside (1-6, 1-5).

Beth-Center 5, Ligonier Valley 2 – Wyatt Pash scored a pair of goals and Parker Amos, Ryder Roule and Nekoda Bundy each added a tally for Beth-Center (5-4, 2-3) in a Section 2-A win over Ligonier Valley (2-5, 0-5).

Bethel Park 2, Ringgold 1 – Henry Gaston scored both goals for Bethel Park (8-1, 7-0) in a Section 3-3A battle against Ringgold (7-2, 5-2). Aiden Weaver scored for the Rams.

Burrell 2, Winchester Thurston 1 – Taber Driscoll and Jayson Ireland had a goal apiece for Burrell (6-1, 5-1) in a Section 3-A win over Winchester Thurston (4-2-2, 3-2).

Butler 3, North Hills 0 – Landon Stevenson, Nick Niebauer and Noah Ernst scored, Drew Knight kept the net clear, and Butler (7-2-1, 5-2) beat North Hills (2-6, 1-6) in Section 1-4A.

Carlynton 1, Brentwood 0 – Mateo Carrasco scored in overtime to lift Carlynton (5-3, 3-2) to a Section 4-A win over Brentwood (1-6, 1-4). Hamza Alezzo assisted on the goal.

Central Valley 5, Ambridge 2 – Cameron DeVincentis scored two goals and Owen Shearer, Jack Dobronz and Joseph Skibinski added a goal apiece to push Central Valley (5-3, 4-3) past Ambridge (1-9-1, 1-5-1) in a Section 2-3A win.

Connellsville 3, Albert Gallatin 0 – Kasey Stanton, Bobby Maloy and Dylan Shallenberger scored for Connellsville (5-5, 3-4) in a Section 3-3A win over Albert Gallatin (2-7, 1-6).

Deer Lakes 5, Freeport 0 – Peyton Kushon and Collin Rodgers each scored two goals to lead Deer Lakes (8-1, 7-0) in a Section 2-2A shutout of Freeport (3-5, 3-4). Seth Drum also had a goal and Wess Boyle kept a clean sheet for the Lancers.

Eden Christian 7, South Side 0 – Ben Rice scored a hat trick as Eden Christian (6-2-1, 4-1-1) shut out South Side (0-7, 0-7) in a Section 1-1A match.

Greensburg Central Catholic 4, California 3 (OT)– Jackson Vacanti scored two goals and Grant Brewer and Mike Oldenburg added one each to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (3-4, 3-2) past California (3-6, 1-4) in a Section 2-A win. Caleb Amoroso, Kaden Weston and Kris Weston scored for the Trojans.

Jeannette 16, Leechburg 0 – Jordan Taylor filled the net with six goals, Austin Emery scored four, and Jared Harper registered a hat trick as Jeannette (6-3, 4-3) dominated Leechburg (0-6, 0-6) in Section 2-2A.

Keystone Oaks 7, Steel Valley 0 – Jake Loper scored a hat trick while Cy Garcia, Rocky Bobak, Luc Philistine and Justin Lai each buried a goal for Keystone Oaks (5-3, 5-2) in a shutout of Steel Valley (2-7, 1-6) in Section 1-2A. Caleb Wolfe provided a clean sheet for the Eagles.

Kiski Area 2, Indiana 1 – Grayson Johngarlo and Nate Witt scored a goal apiece to lead Kiski Area (2-3-1, 1-2-1) past Indiana (2-5-1, 2-3) in a Section 1-3A win.

Knoch 9, Derry 1 – Sam Caldwell had a hat trick and Mason Nebel and Austin Friedline scored two goals apiece to lead Knoch (5-6, 5-2) to a Section 2-2A win over Derry (1-8, 1-6). Evan Haas and Duncan Schilpp also scored for the Knights.

Mars 10, Highlands 0 – Aiden Savona had a hat trick as Mars (6-2-1, 4-1-1) defeated Highlands (2-7, 0-6) in Section 1-3A.

McGuffey 2, Belle Vernon 1 – Dylan Stewart scored both goals for McGuffey (7-3, 5-2) in a Section 3-2A win over Belle Vernon (7-2, 6-1). Trevor Kovatch scored for the Leopards.

Moon 6, West Allegheny 0 – Evan Thomas and Davi Jansson each scored a pair of goals and Aedan Costa and Zecharaiah Balbach each added a goal for Moon (7-2-1, 6-0-1) in a shutout of West Allegheny (1-7, 1-5) in Section 2-3A. Zach Shutak with his fifth shutout of the year for the Tigers.

Mt. Lebanon 2, Allderdice 0 – Benton Thompson and Jack O’Brien each scored a goal for Mt. Lebanon (3-6-1, 3-3-1) to beat Allderdice (1-6, 1-5) in Section 2-4A.

Mt. Pleasant 5, Waynesburg 0 – Aiden Johnson had two goals and an assist while Austin Ulery and Jarett Garn each added a goal and an assist to lead Mt. Pleasant (6-2, 6-1) to a Section 3-2A win over Waynesburg (2-7, 1-6). Jacob McGuinness kept a clean sheet for the Vikings.

Penn-Trafford 8, McKeesport 0 – Daniel Carr, Joe Ambrose and Brady McClintock scored two goals apiece for Penn-Trafford (4-5-1, 3-3-1) in a Section 4-3A win over McKeesport (0-8, 0-6). Logan Murphy and Chad Pusateri also scored for the Warriors.

Peters Township 6, Hempfield 0 – Blake Gabelhart, Brett Martin, Jeven Kelly, Dante Pusateri, Brady Rose and Luke Evans scored to lead Peters Township (6-2, 5-2) to a Section 2-4A victory over Hempfield (0-8, 0-6).

Quaker Valley 12, Ellwood City 0 – Bennett Haas and Jack Karwoski scored two goals apiece while Hugo Castelini, , Cameron Diggins, Colin Benge, Nick Allan, Kiril Grin, Pat Connors, Aiden Dwyer and Isaac Willams each added a goal as Quaker Valley (7-2, 6-0) defeated Ellwood City (0-6, 0-6) in Section 4-2A.

Serra Catholic 2, Bishop Canevin 1 – Collin Holmes and AJ Mejalli each scored a goal to lead Serra Catholic (7-1, 5-0) past Bishop Canevin (3-6, 2-3) in Section 4-A.

Seton LaSalle 10, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Jack Billick scored five goals and Nick Cherry recorded the shutout as Seton LaSalle (6-1-1, 4-1) blanked Chartiers-Houston (0-10, 0-5) in Section 4-A.

Shady Side Academy 9, Greensburg Salem 0 – Amir Awais scored two goals while Drew McKim, Santiago Maiz, Dane Thomas, Hari Vishwanathan, Campbell Tucker-Hill and Chris Bennett all added a goal as Shady Side Academy (5-1, 5-1) beat Greensburg Salem (3-6, 2-5) in Section 2-2A.

South Fayette 3, Chartiers Valley 0 – Michael Plasko, Luke Gillen and Adam Thompson each scored a goal for South Fayette (5-1-2, 4-1-2) in a Section 2-3A win over Chartiers Valley (3-6, 3-4).

Springdale 8, St. Joseph 1 – Billy Lawrence had three goals and two assists to lead Springdale (6-1, 5-1) past St. Joseph (0-8, 0-6) in Section 3-A. Brennan Mattie had two goals and an assist, Pat Wylly a goal and two assists, and John Duku and Matt Lawrence also scored.

Trinity Christian 4, Riverview 1 – Brady Volstad scored two goals and Cami Wright and Luke Kost added a goal apiece for Trinity Christian (5-1, 4-1) in a Section 3-A win over Riverview (2-6, 1-5).

Upper St. Clair 1, Norwin 0 – Jan Sames scored the winning goal, assisted by Charlie Bacdayan, to lead Upper St. Clair (8-1, 6-1) past Norwin (7-2, 6-1) in Section 2-4A. Vir Kamat recorded the shutout.

Yough 3, Washington 1 – Isaac Pacacha had two goals and an assist and Collin Barner also scored to help Yough (6-3-1, 5-2) past Washington (3-4, 3-7) in Section 3-2A.

Girls soccer

Riverview 6, Apollo-Ridge 1 – Lola Abraham scored four goals and had an assist while Mary Quinlan and Cailey Trosch each added a goal as Riverview (7-1) defeated Apollo-Ridge (1-5) in nonsection play.

Field hockey

Penn-Trafford 4, Fox Chapel 2 – Mack Keenan and Ava Hershberger each had a goal and an assist, while Caeley Simon and Liz Welsh added a goal apiece for Penn-Trafford (7-2) in a Section 2A win over Fox Chapel (3-4). Kennedy Murton and Emma Srodes scored for the Foxes.

Upper St. Clair 3, Oakland Catholic 0 – Annie Loomis, Janelle Knierim, and Sophie Knierim each scored a goal for Upper St. Clair (8-1) in a nonsection win over Oakland Catholic (3-4-1).

Boys golf

Section 1-2A – Knoch’s Mason Phillips and Freeport’s Stephen Evans and Jayden Diehl each shot 78 to share medalist honors at Buffalo Golf Course.

Girls golf

Section 3-3A – Penn-Trafford’s Antolena Damico shot an 80 to take medalists honors at Indiana CC and earn a spot in the WPIAL tournament. Franklin Regional’s Ali Boyle and Gianna Johnson and Norwin’s Adelena Robb also qualified.

Section 4-3A – Fox Chapel’s Clara Koteski took medalist honors with a 91 and teammate Lucy Rygelski was a runner-up with a 93 at Pittsburgh Field Club. Both qualified for the WPIAL tournament.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Neshannock 0 – Chloe List had 14 kills, Kailyn Connelly added 10 kills and two blocks, Zoe Ringer had 33 assists, and Aubrey Bumblis had 19 digs for Beaver in a sweep of Neshannock in Section 1-2A.

Brownsville 3, Yough 2 – Skyler Gates had 18 kills and nine blocks, Mackenzie Wade recorded 25 assists and five kills, and Caylee Balabon added 15 digs and seven kills to lead Brownsville to a Section 3-2A win.

Burgettstown 3, Aliquippa 0 – Kaitlyn Nease had six kills and six aces, Martina Whyte added five kills and Peyton Mermon handed out 14 assists to lead Burgettstown to a Section 1-A victory.

California 3, West Greene 1 – Raegan Gillen had 12 kills, Ava Bojtos added 12 assists, and Rakiyah Porter had 12 digs to lead California to a Section 2-A win. Azzy Colditz contributed nine assists, four blocks and three kills.

Derry 3, Deer Lakes 0 – Alayna Williams had nine kills, Katie Dunlap had 15 digs, and Regan Repak had 36 assists for Derry Area in a Section 5-2A win over Deer Lakes.

Hampton 3, Franklin Regional 0 – Emmy Schrom had three aces, 15 kills and six digs, Marin Katona-Bock had six kills and Lilly Muczinski had 34 assists as Hampton swept Franklin Regional in a nonsection match.

Knoch 3, Ambridge 0 – Karlee Buterbaugh had 10 kills and 10 digs, Jess Farbacher had six kills and Olivia Crocker added five kills for Knoch in a sweep of Ambridge in Section 4-3A.

Ligonier Valley 3, Apollo-Ridge 2 – Lacy Sosko had 13 kills and three blocks, Emily Rankin added 11 kills, and Riley Monticue dished out 25 assists.to lead Ligonier Valley to a Section 5-2A win. Abby Tutino had 16 service points and Morgan Smith added 14 service points.

Mapletown 3, Geibel 0 – Miranda Wise had 10 kills and Bailey Lafferty had four kills, 11 aces, and 21 assists for Mapletown in a Section 2-A win over Geibel.

Mars 3, New Castle 0 – Cecilia Christy led Mars with seven kills and four blocks and Taylor Schmitt had three kills and three aces as the Planets swept New Castle in Section 4-3A.

Penn-Trafford 3, Shaler 0 – Elle Visco had 15 kills and Ella Dindak and Sophia Green had nine kills apiece as Penn-Trafford swept Shaler in Section 3-4A.

St. Joseph 3, Trinity Christian 2 – Julie Spinelli had 11 kills to lead St. Joseph to a 3-2 victory in Section 4-A. Kate Giannetta had 19 service points and Jillian Bloch added 18 for ther Spartans.
