High school roundup for Sept. 25, 2023: North Catholic deals 1st loss to Avonworth

Simone Sharpless scored the winning goal, sending North Catholic to a 1-0 win over Avonworth in a Section 1-2A girls soccer showdown Monday night. Rylee Roccon assisted on the goal and Rylee Kumer recorded the shutout for North Catholic (7-2, 6-1). It was the first loss of the season for Avonworth (8-1-2, 6-1).
Beaver 6, Hopewell 0 – Sydney Chontos scored a hat trick while Marina Hahn, Carly Hauser and Lilia Battalini added a goal apiece as Beaver (5-3-1, 3-3-1) defeated Hopewell (0-9, 0-7) in Section 1-2A. Kaitlyn Reap had two assists and Gracie Turyan made two saves for the shutout.
Bethel Park 3, Norwin 0 – Keira Mehalko, Grace Ferency and Calle DalBon scored as Bethel Park (5-4-1, 4-4) shut out Norwin (2-8, 2-6) in Section 2-4A.
Burrell 3, Knoch 0 – Makiah Buchak had a goal and an assist and Grace Nesko and Miley Kariotis also scored to lead Burrell (9-2, 5-1) past Knoch (5-4-2, 3-2-1) in a Section 2-2A showdown. Tessa Mathabel added an assist for the Bucs.
Charleroi 4, Bentworth 0 – McKenna DeUnger had two goals and an assist, Bell Carroto added a goal and three assists and Rhianna Grogan also found the net as Charleroi (9-1, 6-1) scored four times in the second half to beat Bentworth (4-5-1, 2-4-1) in Section 2-A.
Chartiers-Houston 1, Beth-Center 0 – Amelia Brose scored the winning goal and Grace McAvoy recorded the shutout as Chartiers-Houston (10-1, 6-1) got past Beth-Center (1-8, 0-7) in Section 2-A.
Connellsville 4, Ringgold 3 – Haley Washington, Mikayla Hay, Grace Bosnic and Addison Bandemer scored for Connellsville (7-4, 6-2) in a close Section 2-3A match. Imani Arnold scored a pair of goals and Elizzabeth Wilson chipped in another for Ringgold (3-7-2, 2-5-1).
East Allegheny 5, McKeesport 4 – Madison Fabrizi had a hat trick, Rachael DiFrancesco and Annie Lopes each had a goal and an assist, and Kasey Beresford added a pair of assists as East Allegheny (2-5) defeated McKeesport in a nonsection match for its second straight win.
Franklin Regional 1, Montour 1 – Allyssa Velasquez scored for Franklin Regional (6-3-1) and Riley Hall found the equalizer for Montour (7-0-3) in a nonsection draw.
Keystone Oaks 7, Yough 0 – Aly Simon scored four goals, Becca Simon added two and Maddie Arment had another as Keystone Oaks (7-4) beat Yough (3-8) in nonsection play. Jenna Janesko kept a clean sheet for the Golden Eagles.
Kiski Area 12, Ligonier Valley 0 – Sophia Hranica had a hat trick and Joy Robbibaro added a pair of goals to lead Kiski Area (5-6-1) to a nonsection win over Ligonier Valley (0-10). Marlee Koziatek, Alexis Zidek, Valerie Klingensmith, Lila Clouser, Kaitlin Higgins, Camryn Kunz and Addison Bell also scored.
Latrobe 9, Greensburg Salem 0 – Regan Reilly had a hat trick and Maddy Petruzzi scored twice as Latrobe (8-1, 6-1) beat Greensburg Salem (2-8-1, 1-6) in Section 3-3A. Robin Reilly, Ava Yurko, Annalyse Bauer and Emerson Shine also scored. Regan and Robin Reilly each had two assists and Corinne Brunetto and Allie Cole combined on the shutout.
Mars 5, Hampton 0 – Addi Girdwood and Brynn Ramsey had a goal an assist apiece and Lily Wolf, Meredith Ashbaugh and Brooke Nihoff also scored as Mars (9-0, 7-0) topped Hampton (7-2, 5-2) in a matchup of top teams in Section 1-3A. Ainsley Ray added two assists and Kate McEnroe and Lily Goodworth combined on the shutout.
Mt. Lebanon 3, Baldwin 0 — Sara Incorvati, Jackie Massoff and Ava Heidenrich scored to lift Mt. Lebanon (7-4, 5-3) past Baldwin (3-7, 1-7) in Section 2-4A.
Mt. Pleasant 1, South Park 0 – Morgan Gesinski set up Riley Gesinski for the game’s lone goal as Mt. Pleasant (8-2) defeated South Park (7-3) in a nonsection matchup of Class 2A section leaders. The Vikings (5-0 in Section 3) and Eagles (5-0 in Section 4) are unbeaten in section play.
North Allegheny 3, Shaler 0 – Sam Braden, Ally Ruiz and Jadyn Coy scored as North Allegheny (11-0, 8-0) defeated Shaler (3-7, 1-7) in Section 1-4A.
Penn-Trafford 4, Penn Hills 0 – Emilie Oslosky and Olivia Weishaar contributed a goal and an assist to help Penn-Trafford (7-3, 4-3) top Penn Hills (2-7, 0-7) in Section 3-3A. Chloe Walton and Eilish Connolly also scored for the Warriors.
Peters Township 2, Canon-McMillan 0 – Cam Klein and Julia Spergel scored to lift Peters Township (9-0-1, 7-0-1) over Canon-McMillan (5-4-1, 5-2-1) in Section 2-4A.
Pine-Richland 3, Butler 1 – Lily Dejesu, Abby Santina and Molly Baker scored to lead Pine-Richland (4-6, 4-4) to a Section 1-6A win. Cecelia Wolford scored for Butler (7-4, 5-3).
Plum 5, Gateway 0 – Gianna Revetta, Rayla Smith, Mia Nardo, Emily Grubich and Olivia Bigger all found the net as Plum (8-0-1, 7-0) shut out Gateway (2-5-1, 2-5) in Section 3-3A.
Quaker Valley 5, Ambridge 0 – Annabelle Miko scored twice while Avery Persuit, Ari Bosh and Mia Strelec scored for Quaker Valley (6-2-1, 4-2-1) in a Section 1-2A win over Ambridge (1-6, 1-6).
Seton LaSalle 8, Jeannette 0 – Angelina McGrath had a hat trick, Sydney Towers scored a pair and Catie Kozel, Brynlee Robinson and Sophia Samson each tallied a goal for Seton LaSalle (4-4, 2-3) in a shutout of Jeannette (0-7-1, 0-6) in Section 1-A. Maurah Hoyt recorded the shutout for the Rebels.
South Fayette 1, West Allegheny 0 – Julianna Rossi scored the lone goal and South Fayette (6-5-1, 5-2) bested West Allegheny (6-5, 3-4) in Section 4-3A.
Springdale 2, OLSH 0 – Briana Ross scored both goals with assists from Molly Hurley and Brooke Taliani as Springdale (7-1) blanked OLSH (4-3) in a nonsection matchup.
Thomas Jefferson 5, Belle Vernon 1 – Cece Wessel, Aubrey Little, Natalie Lamenza, Aislin Majoris and Sami Maglicco scored to lead Thomas Jefferson (9-1, 7-1) to a Section 2-3A win. Chessa Mertz scored for Belle Vernon (3-6-1, 2-5-1).
Upper St. Clair 13, Hempfield 0 – Brooke Bodamer had a hat trick and Helena Walker and Sierra Dupre each scored twice to lead Upper St. Clair (10-1, 7-1) past Hempfield (1-9, 0-8) in Section 2-4A. Abby Mascaro, Meredith Mannix, Ellie Shanholtzer, Merdith Huzjak, Kate Falce and Anna Snyder also scored for the Panthers.
Waynesburg 5, Monessen 1 – Ella Miller recorded a hat trick and added an assist, Rylei Rastoka had a goal and two assists and Kaley Rohanna also scored for Waynesburg (7-2, 5-2) in a Section 2-A win against Monessen (3-6-1, 1-5-1). Samantha Saylor scored for the Greyhounds.
Boys soccer
Beth-Center 11, Geibel 1 – Eleven players found the net for Beth-Center (8-4) in a nonsection win over Geibel. Goal scorers were Joey Rodriguez, Wyatt Pash, Acie Lawrence, Parker Amos, Nekoda Bundy, Matthew Wrenshall, Ryder Roule, Jordan Lowman, Evan Lowman, Reiner King and Rylan Piper.
Field hockey
Penn-Trafford 5, Oakland Catholic 0 – Ava Hershberger scored two goals and had an assist while Liz Welsh, Mack Keenan and Caeley Simon each discord a goal as Penn-Trafford shut out Oakland Catholic in Section 2A.
Pine-Richland 4, North Allegheny 1 – Georgia Rottinghaus had two goals and an assist to lead Pine-Richland to a Section 3A victory over North Allegheny.
Girls volleyball
Brownsville 3, Washington 0 – Caylee Balabon had eight aces and seven digs, Skyler Gates had 17 kills and five blocks, Cassidee Settles had 15 digs, and Mackenzie Wade had 14 assists as Brownsville swept Washington in Section 3-2A.
Hampton 3, Mars 0 – Emmy Schrom had two aces, 13 kills and six digs and Lilly Muczinski had three aces, six digs and 32 assists to lead Hampton to a sweep of Mars in a nonsection match. Avery Koontz had 11 digs and four assists for the Talbots.
Knoch 3, Highlands 0 – Jess Farbacher and Brynne Smith each had six kills and Karlee Buterbaugh added 10 kills as Knoch swept a nonsection match against Highlands.
