High school roundup for Sept. 28, 2023: Shady Side Academy takes care of Deer Lakes in clash of top 2A teams

Drew McKim scored a hat trick as Shady Side Academy earned a season split with Deer Lakes with a 6-2 boys soccer victory in Section 2-2A on Thursday night.

Amir Awais, Santiago Maiz and Mark Bence also scored for the Bulldogs (9-1, 8-1), who avenged a Sept. 5 loss to the Lancers (9-2, 8-1). The teams appear destined to share the section title for the second straight year. Colton Bish and Collin Rodgers scored for Deer Lakes.

Allderdice 5, Hempfield 0 – Peter Myrianthopolous had a hat trick for Allderdice (2-8, 2-7) in a Section 2-4A win over Hempfield (0-11, 0-9).

Avonworth 4, Mohawk 0 – Rowan Carmichael had a goal and an assist to lead Avonworth (9-2-1, 8-1) past Mohawk (3-8, 3-6) in Section 4-2A.

Beaver 3, Hopewell 0 – Kyle Carlsen had a pair of goals and Anton Kuespert also scored to help Beaver (6-4, 6-3) past Hopewell (6-4, 4-4) in Section 4-2A.

Belle Vernon 4, Waynesburg 2 – Trevor Kovatch had a hat trick and Brandon Yeschenko scored to break a second-half tie for Belle Vernon (10-2, 9-1) in a Section 3-2A win. Owen Haught scored twice for Waynesburg (3-9, 2-8).

Bethel Park 2, Laurel Highlands 0 – Henry Gaston and Adam Thompson scored and Luke Rubican recorded the shutout as Bethel Park (10-1-1, 9-0-1) beat Laurel Highlands (4-8, 2-8) in Section 3-3A.

Burrell 8, St. Joseph 0 – Jayson Ireland had a hat trick and Cam Wagner added two goals and an assist as Burrell (9-1, 7-1) defeated St. Joseph (0-10, 0-8) in Section 3-A. Will Doutt, Haydn Herbulock and Riley Anthony also scored and Luke Postupack added three assists for the Bucs.

Charleroi 6, Beth-Center 0 – Arlo McIntyre scored two goals and Bryce Large, Dylan Klinger, Ethan Hartley and Landon Barcus each added one for Charleroi (11-0, 7-0) in a Section 2-A win over Beth-Center (8-5, 3-4).

East Allegheny 7, Steel Valley 1 – Ryan Rupert scored five goals, Colin Goldstein had a goal and two assists, and Chase Stultz also scored for East Allegheny (9-1-1, 8-1-1) in a Section 1-2A win over Steel Valley (2-11, 1-9).

Franklin Regional 2, Penn-Trafford 1 – Daniel Christafano and Roman Larese scored to lead Franklin Regional (8-4, 7-3) past Penn-Trafford (4-7-2, 3-5-2) in a Section 4-3A win. Ben Luchs scored for the Warriors.

Greensburg Central Catholic 2, Ligonier Valley 1 – Jackson Vacanti scored the game-winning goal on a long-range shot with seven seconds left for Greensburg Central Catholic (4-7, 4-4) in a Section 2-A matchup. Hunter Wright scored for Ligonier Valley (2-8-1, 0-7). Grant Brewer also scored for the Centurions.

Greensburg Salem 7, Derry 3 – Drezdan Geselman and Grady Rizzo scored twice each to propel Greensburg Salem (5-7, 4-6) past Derry (2-10, 2-8) in Section 2-2A.

Hampton 7, Kiski Area 0 – Luke Fiscus had a hat trick and Coleman Docherty netted a pair of goals to lead Hampton (10-1-1, 8-0-1) past Kiski Area (3-5-1, 3-3-1) in Section 1-3A.

Keystone Oaks 2, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Makram Ishaq scored both goals for Keystone Oaks (6-5, 6-4) in a Section 1-2A win over Elizabeth Forward (6-4-1, 5-4-1).

Knoch 5, Jeannette 2 – Mason Nebel had a hat trick and Evan Haas and Will Schwalm added a goal apiece to lead Knoch (7-7, 7-3) past Jeannette (7-5, 5-5) in Section 2-2A. Jordan Taylor and Austin Emery scored for the Jayhawks.

Mars 3, North Catholic 0 – Zack Angoff, Max Davis and Jack Scanlon scored for Mars (8-3-1, 6-2-1) in a Section 1-3A win over North Catholic (4-6, 3-3).

Montour 4, West Allegheny 2 – Dom Passaro and Andrew Prunier netted a pair of goals apiece to help Montour (8-2, 8-1) top West Allegheny (3-7, 3-5) in Section 2-3A.

Moon 4, Central Valley 1 – Mike Walenchok scored two goals and Davi Jansson and Aedan Costa added a goal apiece for Moon (9-2-1, 8-0-1) in a Section 2-3A win over Central Valley (6-5-1, 4-5-1).

Mt. Pleasant 6, Brownsville 0 – Luke Rivardo scored four goals and Luke Domasky added two to lead Mt. Pleasant (9-2, 9-1) to a Section 3-2A win over Brownsville (0-12, 0-10).

North Allegheny 2, Butler 2 – Arnav Patel scored the tying goal with less than two minutes left in regulation and Lucas Henderson also scored for North Allegheny (11-0-2, 9-0-2) in a Section 1-4A draw. Cody Lubinsky scored for Butler (9-2-2, 6-2-1).

Peters Township 6, Baldwin 0 – Blake Gabelhart scored two goals and Conner Heinsen, Jeven Kelly, Nathan Froelich and Adam Cendroski added a goal apiece for Peters Township (8-3, 7-3) in a Section 2-4A win over Baldwin (3-10, 1-9).

Plum 2, Obama Academy 0 – Tyler Yurisinec and Travis Kodman scored for Plum (12-1, 10-0) in a Section 4-3A win over Obama Academy (1-9-1, 1-8-1).

Quaker Valley 11, Riverside 0 – Bennett Haas, Nick Allan and Matteo Castellini scored two goals each and the Quakers (9-3, 8-1) cruised to a Section 4-2A win over Riverside (2-8, 1-7).

Ringgold 8, Uniontown 3 – Nick Evans had a hat trick and Jack Brodak added two goals to lead Ringgold (9-2, 7-2) to a Section 3-3A win over Uniontown (5-9, 2-8). Michael Stasko, Juraj Stasko and Nico Bove also scored for the Rams.

Seneca Valley 2, Central Catholic 0 – Tyler Kuhar and Tyler Holloway scored and Gus Wytcherley recorded the shutout as Seneca Valley (9-0-3, 7-0-3) beat Central Catholic (5-6, 4-6) in Section 1-4A.

Serra Catholic 2, Carlynton 1 – AJ Mejalli scored both goals to lead Serra Catholic (9-1, 7-0) past Carlynton (7-5, 4-3) in a Section 4-A win.

Seton LaSalle 4, Brentwood 0 – Tommy Kovalcik scored a pair of goals and Nick Cherry recorded the shutout as Seton LaSalle (9-1-1, 6-1) beat Brentwood (1-8, 1-6) in Section 4-A.. Tyler Kovalcik and Jack Billick also scored.

South Fayette 6, Ambridge 0 – Mike Plasko had a hat trick and Nate Belcufine, Yunus Al Kamel and Cole Johnson also scored to lead South Fayette (7-1-3, 6-1-3) past Ambridge (1-12-1, 1-8-1) in Section 2-3A.

Springdale 5, Aquinas Academy 1 – Billy Lawrence and Matt Lawrence had two goals each to power the Dynamos (8-2, 7-2) past Aquinas Academy (4-7, 2-7) in Section 3-A. Billy Lawrence had two assists and Nate Dubas added a goal.

Thomas Jefferson 3, Connellsville 1 – Brayden Miller had a hat trick as Thomas Jefferson (10-1-1, 8-1-1) earned a Section 3-3A win over Connellsville (5-8, 3-7). Teran Kemp scored for the Falcons.

Trinity 5, Albert Gallatin 0 – Andy Palm had two goals and Matteo Lesako, Cooper Cincinnati and Faiden Hodgson also scored for Trinity (6-4, 6-4) in a Section 3-3A win over Albert Gallatin (2-10, 1-9).

Upper St. Clair 1, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Jacob Higgs scored the winning goal as Upper St. Clair (11-1, 9-1) blanked Mt. Lebanon (5-7-1, 5-4-1) in Section 2-4A.

Yough 4, Southmoreland 1 – Isaac Pacacha scored twice, Collin Barner had a goal and an assist, and Noah Jurcevich also scored as Yough (7-5-1, 6-4) defeated Southmoreland (3-9, 2-8) in Section 3-2A.

Girls soccer

Elizabeth Forward 9, Yough 0 – Brooklyn Baldensperger scored four goals and Giovanna Ferraro added a pair as Elizabeth Forward (8-2) beat Yough (4-9) in a nonsection match.

Freeport 6, Armstrong 3 – Camryn Woods had a hat trick and Samantha Liput added two goals to lead Freeport (7-1-1) past Armstrong (4-9) in a nonsection win. Peyton Los also scored for the Yellowjackets.

Mt. Pleasant 5, Connellsville 0 – Morgan Gesinski scored twice and Riley Gesinski, Rylin Bugosh and Brooklyn Ulery also found the net as Mt. Pleasant (9-2) defeated Connellsville (7-6) in a nonsection match.

Plum 7, Hampton 0 – Ava Weleski had a hat trick to lead Plum (10-0-1) past Hampton (8-3) in a nonsection match. Serena Carnahan, Rayla Smith, Gianna Revetta and Olivia Bigger also scored.

Waynesburg 7, Brownsville 1 – Ella Miller recorded a hat trick and added an assist, aiding Waynesburg (9-2) in a nonsection win over Brownsville (0-10).

Field hockey

Penn-Trafford 9, Ellis 0 – Ava Hershberger, Mackenzie Keenan and Caeley Simon scored two goals apiece for Penn-Trafford in a nonsection win over Ellis. Phoebe Gross, Maura Spadone, and Lyla Gross also scored.

Girls volleyball

Brownsville 3, McGuffey 1 – Skyler Gates had 21 kills and 14 blocks to lead Brownsville to a Section 3-2A win. Cassidee Settles had 17 digs and Mackenzie Wade handed out 19 assists for the Falcons.

Burgettstown 3, South Side 0 — Kaitlyn Nease had 20 kills and 15 digs and Layla Sherman added 11 kills and 11 digs for Burgettstown in a Section 1-A win. Peyton Mermon handed out 13 assists and Paige Klodowski added five kills.

Derry 3, Valley 0 – Alayna Williams had seven kills and Haylee Myers added six kills for Derry in a Section 5-2A win. Regan Repak dished out 14 assists, Katie Dunlap recorded seven digs, and Kayla Enos served five aces for the Trojans.

Indiana 3, Franklin Regional 1 – Paige Fisanich and Ashlynn Branan had 12 kills each and Stella Stossel added 11 kills for Indiana in a Section 5-3A win. Alex Ball contributed 22 digs and Hannah Cowburn dished out 38 assists for the Indians. For the Panthers, Carson Burgh had nine kills and 38 assists, Sophia Reitz also had nine kills, Hadley Regelski added eight kills and six blocks, Brooke Feorene had 21 digs and Gabby Rothrauff added 14 digs.

Mars 3, Knoch 2 – Ella Nicotra had 21 kills, Lily Javor recorded 14 kills and 12 digs, Hailey Duker handed out 40 assists, and Cecilia Christy had 10 kills to lead Mars to a Section 4-3A win. Karlee Buterbaugh had 22 kills, Jess Farbacher added seven kills and 22 digs and Avery Adams had 19 digs for Knoch.

Southmoreland 3, Beth-Center 0 – Taylor Doppelheuer had seven kills and four blocks and Zoey Welling dished out 11 assists to lead Southmoreland in Section 3-2A. Amarah McCutcheon contributed six kills and two blocks.

Girls tennis

Section 1-3A – The top-seeded team of senior Ellen Liu and sophomore Michelle Yan completed its run to a section doubles championship with a win over a pair of Franklin Regional teammates. Liu and Yan defeated juniors Lucy Zheng and Makinzie Marcus, 6-1, 6-2, in the championship match. The Kiski area tandem of Ambur and Aubrie Orowitz won the third-place match, defeating Latrobe’s Carlin Burkovac and Maria Fetter, 6-4, 6-4. In Class 3A, the top four teams in each section advance to the WPIAL tournament Oct. 4-5.

Section 2-3A – The top-seeded team of Payton Mauser and Tia Sousson ended the Cinderella run of 10th seed Siya Jain and Rebecca Murphy in an all-North Allegheny final. Mauser and Sousson defeated Jain and Murphy, 6-1, 6-2. Moon’s Ria Khazanchi and Keira Wisebeat Pine-Richland’s Deeya Nayyar and Rachel Smith in the third-place match, 6-4, 7-5.

Section 1-2A – The second seed beat the fifth seed in an All-Indiana final as Anna Buterbaugh and Kaye Lehman defeated Tess Kusneski and Eve Kusneski, 6-2, 6-2. Greensburg Central Catholic’s Sasha Hoffman and Stella Bossert claimed the final spot in the Class 2A WPIAL doubles tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Amelia Miller and Beatrix Pawlikowsky of Southmoreland in the third-place match. The top three teams in each section in Class 2A advance to WPIALs.

Section 2-2A – The third-seeded team of Milla Konakchieva and Maddie Cioccio defeated Chartiers Valley teammates Elle Wilshire and Mari Wilshire, the top seeds, 6-3, 6-2 in the section finals. Elli-Anne Laing and Nicole Camargo defeated Kaitlyn Mattas and Ava Grisetti, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4), in an all-South Park third-place match.

Section 3-2A – Knoch’s Lindsey and Emily Greb, the 2021 PIAA Class 2A doubles champs, rolled to a section title, defeating Katie Hardy and Brea Kelly of North Catholic, 6-0, 6-0. The Greb sisters lost a total of one game in three matches in the tournament. Another Knoch team, Jade Nether and Lara Ejzak, also won Thursday without dropping a game, qualifying for the WPIAL tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sam Jones and McKenna Restori of Hampton.

Section 4-2A – The top two seeds battled it out in a three-set final with No. 1 Anna Mrkonja and Mia Woodske of Beaver defeating No. 2 Rachel Hardek and Sara Miloszewski of Central Valley, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Marissa Butcher and Lily Ceriani topped Lyric Knepshield and Skye Lanham, 6-3, 6-3, in an all-Blackhawk third-place match.

Section 5-2A – The top-seeded team of Peja Cruise and Raven Karlik from Montour took care of business in the section finals, defeating second-seeded Livia Jobbins and Hannah Stein of Quaker Valley, 6-1, 6-3. Marann Buckanovich and Elen Clark of Winchester Thurston topped Julia Samarin and Ivy Hostutler of Keystone Oaks, 7-6 (6), 6-3, in the third-place match.
