High school roundup for Sept. 29, 2018: Avonworth outpaces Summit Academy

Derek Johncour completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and five touchdowns to lead Avonworth (5-1, 3-1) to 35-8 win over Summit Academy (0-6, 0-3) in Class 2A Allegheny Conference action. Ethan Syam caught four passes for 106 yards, and Turner Grau added four receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Avonworth’s defense held Summit Academy to 134 total yards.

Ellwood City 27, Western Beaver 21 (OT) — Brady Welsh ran in from 4 yards to lead Ellwood City (1-5, 1-3) to an overtime victory over Western Beaver (2-4, 1-3) in Class 2A Midwestern Conference action. Ellwood City won in overtime after Western Beaver scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to force the extra frame. Cam Irvine connected with Dakari Bradford on an 82-yard touchdown pass for the first score, and Irvine ran in from 1 yard for the second score. Donavin Chambers scored two touchdowns for Ellwood City — one on the ground and one through the air.

Boys soccer

Moon 1, West Mifflin 0 — Viktor Korzilius scored a goal in the first half to lead Moon (10-2-1) to a nonsection win over West Mifflin (4-9).

Greensburg Central Catholic 2, Sewickley Academy 1 — Dillon Sebek scored the winning goal with five minutes remaining to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (7-1) to a nonsection win over Sewickley Academy (7-2). Nate Ward scored the tying goal and provided the pivotal assist on Sebek’s goal. With the win, the Centurions extend their winning streak to five games.

North Allegheny 1, Penn-Trafford 0 — Sam Wilson scored the only goal needed to lift North Allegheny (9-3) to a nonsection win over Penn-Trafford (6-6-1). Grant Baierl earned the shutout.

Seton LaSalle 2, Shady Side Academy 0 — Kellen Krebs and Gabe Rosario netted goals for Seton LaSalle (9-2) in a nonsection win over Shady Side Academy (5-3-1). Sam Reinhart earned the shutout for Seton LaSalle, which logged its fourth shutout of the season.

Mt. Pleasant 3, Belle Vernon 0 — Mt. Pleasant (8-2) won their fourth consecutive game with a win over Belle Vernon (8-3-1) in nonsection play. Mt. Pleasant has outscored opponents 15-0 in the last four games.

Quaker Valley 2, Montour 1 — Franky Fernandez and Dom Reiter scored to lead Quaker Valley (9-3) to a nonsection win over Montour (1-10-1). Tommy Guild tallied the assist on Fernandez’s goal.

Elizabeth Forward 4, Southmoreland 3 (OT) — Ethan Bowser scored his third goal of the game in the seventh minute of overtime to lead Elizabeth Forward (7-5) to a nonsection win at Southmoreland (5-6).

Kiski Area 4, Burrell 1— Greg Paes and Owen Zimmerman both scored a pair of goals to lead Kiski Area (7-5) past nonconference foe Burrell (3-6-2).

Serra Catholic 2, East Allegheny 1 — Jimmy Moon scored the winning goal on a header off Nick Almeter’s corner kick in second half as Serra Catholic (5-1) defeated East Allegheny (6-3) in nonsection play.

Highlands 2, Springdale 0 — In nonsection play, Greg Wygonik and Gerald Butler scored to lead Highlands (4-8) past Springdale (7-2-1).

Trinity 2, Chartiers-Houston 1 — Jacob Paez scored on a free kick with 24 seconds left as Trinity (6-5) beat Chartiers-Houston (3-7-2) in a nonsection matchup.

Girls soccer

Norwin 4, North Hills 0 — Lacey Bernick scored two goals to lead Norwin (9-1) to a nonsection win over North Hills (4-7-1). Morgan Sigut and Lexi Gray score the other two goals, and Liz Waszkiewicz made five saves to earn the shutout.

Latrobe 3, Greensburg Salem 0 — Maddie Delucio scored three goals to lead Latrobe (2-8) to a win over Greensburg Salem (4-7) in nonsection action. Lillian Jones earned the shutout for Latrobe, and Sophhia Hoch had two assists.

Montour 5, Franklin Regional 2 — Montour (7-2) won its sixth game out of the last seven after a nonsection win over Franklin Regional (4-5-2).

Springdale 7, Riverview 0 — Lily Iadicicco and Jade Vrabel each scored twice as the Dynamos rolled to a Section 1-A win over Riverview (1-8, 1-5). Erica Crail and Sydni Henley each added a goal and an assist for Springdale (4-3, 2-2). Morgan Fitzgerald also tallied a goal.

Burrell 4, Apollo-Ridge 0 — Cara Fiore scored a pair of goals as Burrell rolled past Section 2-AA rival Apollo-Ridge (2-3-1, 1-3-1) and extend the Bucs’ winning streak to six games. The loss is the Vikings’ third in a row. Jordyn Kowalkowski and Madison Schaub added goals, and goalkeeper Delaney O’Brien turned in a clean sheet for Burrell (8-1-1, 6-1).

Field hockey

Peters Township 5, Penn-Trafford 2 — Maura Farinelli scored three goals to lead Peters Township to a Division I win against Penn-Trafford. Lexi Lawrence and Nica Schratz added goals for Peters Township.
