Brentwood got defensive in their WPIAL Class AA Section 4 contest Tuesday against Charleroi. The Spartans did not make any errors and played solid defense behind starting pitcher Meghan Gildea in a 3-1 victory over the Cougars.
“Our defense has has been great this year,” said coach Jen Ditoro. “The ladies have been bringing it all year.”
Freshman Taryn Sherry, making her first start in center field this year, was two for two at the plate with all three run batted in. She delivered a two out, two run double in the right center gap in the 3rd inning, driving home Sydney Bauer and Alexis Gaughan, who had each singled, making it 2-0 Spartans.
Charleroi cut the lead in half in the top of the 5th inning when Carina Gottheld hit a two out RBI single to score Angie Tilghman to make it 2-1 Brentwood.
The Spartans picked up a big insurance run in the bottom of the 5th though when Sherry blooped a bases loaded single to right field to score Bauer and make it 3-1.
With Brentwood playing such good defense, it was ironic that the game would end on a ground ball that shortstop Gaughan went hard to her left, fielded the ball, stepped on the bag and threw to first for the clinching six-to-three double play.
Senior Meghan Gildea, who is pitching with a heavy brace on her injured knee that will require postseason surgery, allowed 9 hits, but did not walk a Cougars batter in striking out 3 for the victory. Jenny Tilghman pitched well in the loss for Charleroi, allowing two earned runs on six hits with three walks in six innings.
With the win, Brentwood improves to 4-2 in the section and solidifies their spot in second place behind Greensburg Central Catholic in AA-4.
