Hometown Softball Program Game Recap – Vincentian Academy – 05/01/2012

On Senior Day at Vincentian Academy, the Royals needed just five innings to dispatch the North Catholic Trojanettes 11-1 to close out section play on Tuesday afternoon. Vincentian Academy took the lead for good in the second inning and used a five run bottom of the fifth for the ten-run rule win.

North Catholic jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first without a hit, Brianne Murray drew a bases-loaded walk, but Danielle Melvin was able to catch Julia Beadnell looking to end the threat. A run scoring single for Ashlee Darby and a two run double by Katie Yauch put Vincentian Academy up 3-1 after two.

Noreen Fischer singled home a run in the third, Karina Maharaja was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the fifth Royals run. Yauch scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and doubles by Natalie Milas and Darby as well as a rbi single for Bridget Melvin and a two run double by Danielle Melvin put Vincentian Academy up 10-1. with the bases loaded, Bridget Melvin scored on a wild pitch to end the game.

Yauch was 3-3 and on base four times for the Royals, now 11-4 overall. Darby, Fischer and Milas each had two hits. Darby, Yauch and Danielle Melvin all drove in two runs each.

Danielle Melvin was the winning pitcher, allowing just one run on three hits. Melvin fanned seven, but allowed five walks and hit three batters. North Catholic stranded nine runners on base.

The Royals are in the playoffs, finishing 8-2 in Section 3-A. Zonia Moore went 1 for 3 and scored once, she said playing well was a matter of pride, she wanted to finish the regular season strong. Darby added that Royals had high expectations coming into the season, after winning three straight WPIAL titles and five straight title appearances from 2006-10, and she is looking forward to the playoffs after missing the 2011 post-season with a knee injury.

Head coach Kara Stroup said sometimes it takes a little time for Danielle Melvin to get going, she was able to settle in and pitch a good game. She looks for Char-Houston, section rival Sto-Rox and Carmichaels also as contenders for the Class A title as well as Shenango and South Side Beaver.

Stroup credited Darby on her comeback from the knee injury, that she had not swung a bat in almost a year before the season.

Vincentian Academy has one game remaining this season, a non-league match up at Hilltop Field with the Shaler Titans on May 10th.
