In a coaching matchup between father and daughter, it was Vince Sortino and Baldwin that prevailed against Peters Township and Nicole Davis. Dad’s Highlanders edged daughter’s Indians 2-1 in a 6A Section 1 tilt at Baldwin High School.

For the first four innings, pitching and defense prevailed, as both squads were held off the scoreboard. Peters Township (2-3, 3-3) opened the contest with a pair of singles against Baldwin hurler Addie Tagg, but Tagg stranded two runners to escape the frame unscathed. On the other side, Peters Township pitcher Kylie Hartbauer was equally impressive, as she allowed just two hits in the first four innings.

In the top of the fifth, the Indians produced two baserunners, courtesy of an error and a single. Tagg induced a flyout by Olivia Castellone to end the threat, though.

In the bottom of the inning, the Highlanders (4-0, 4-1) finally struck first, aided by some defensive mishaps by PT. With one out, Carly Santillo delivered a single to left field, and Emma Berta’s bunt resulted in a throwing error by PT third baseman Kate Hondru. After Bella Rossa flew out, Baldwin’s prolific shortstop, Taylor Dadig, stepped to the plate. Dadig hit a ball sharply to short, but Haley Cecere snatched it and threw to third base. The throw pulled Hondru off the bag, however, extending the inning and loading the bases. Cassie Carlson made the Indians pay, as she ripped a two-run single.

Through a brief rain delay, that 2-0 edge remained intact until the top of the seventh, when Hartbaugh blasted a solo home run to trim Peters Township’s deficit to 2-1. After another Indians hit, though, Tagg retired the final two batters, sealing the victory for Baldwin.
Baldwin will face another crucial section test tomorrow, as the Highlanders travel to face Canon-McMillan. Similarly, Peters Township will play the Big Macs, at home on Thursday.
