A year ago, they were the final two victims of South Park’s district championship run.

Wednesday, Hopewell visits Avonworth to open up Section 1-2A play on opening night of section play in WPIAL girls’ soccer.

Last year, South Park shutout Avonworth 3-0 in the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals before blanking Hopewell 1-0 in the district championship match.

Hopewell won the section crown a year ago with an 11-0-1 record. The Vikings only blemish was a 1-1 tie with the runner-up Antelopes in the team’s first match of the year.

In the second match at Avonworth, the Vikings edged the Antelopes 2-1.

Early meeting of top two in section

There are 44 WPIAL girls’ soccer section openers set for Wednesday.

The Hopewell at Avonworth match is one of two contests pitting the top two teams in a section from a year ago.

Seton LaSalle hosts Bishop Canevin Wednesday in a Section 4-A opener.

In 2018, Seton LaSalle won the section title with a 9-1-2 record while Bishop Canevin was second at 9-3-0.

The Rebels edged the Crusaders in both regular season meetings by scores of 2-1 and 2-0.
