Mars, Mt. Lebanon, Shady Side Academy earn No. 1 seeds in 2024 WPIAL lacrosse playoffs

Defending champion Mars, which swept the WPIAL Class 2A lacrosse titles a year ago, will start this season’s playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the boys and girls tournaments.

The Mars boys are seven-time defending WPIAL champions, and the girls have won two titles in the past three years.

The Shady Side Academy boys and Mt. Lebanon girls earned the No. 1 seeds in the Class 3A playoffs. The WPIAL revealed the brackets Thursday.

Class 2A starts play Monday, and Class 3A has first-round games Tuesday. The tournaments conclude May 22-23 with championship games at Robert Morris’ Joe Walton Stadium. The two girls brackets include a combined 25 teams. The boys field has 24.

The top seeds in Class 2A boys were No. 1 Mars (14-3), No. 2 South Fayette (16-1), No. 3 Penn-Trafford (14-4) and No. 4 Hampton (10-6). In 2A girls, the top spots went to No. 1 Mars (14-2-1), No. 2 Indiana (13-2), No. 3 Chartiers Valley (14-2) and No. 4 Penn-Trafford (15-2).

Joining No. 1 seed Shady Side Academy (11-6) as favorites in the 3A boys bracket were No. 2 Mt. Lebanon (13-4), No. 3 Upper St. Clair (12-3) and No. 4 North Allegheny (12-6).

Undefeated Mt. Lebanon (15-0) topped the Class 3A girls bracket followed by No. 2 Pine-Richland (14-1-1), No. 3 Upper St. Clair (11-5) and No. 4 Fox Chapel (12-4).
