In what has been a trying start to the 2016 campaign, the Moon Lady Tigers have been staying positive. That patience and positivity showed again for coach Sarah Durham’s squad on Thursday night, even in dropping a 4A-Section 2 matchup to Mt. Lebanon in straight sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-13). They battled back and forth with the Lady Blue Devils, but could not muster enough firepower to grab their first section victory.

The scrappy defense of Moon wrecked havoc on the visiting Lady Blue Devils. Moon continually mustered long volleys from the great defensive digs of senior liberal Raquel Richards and company in the back line. Adrianna Cycak had five of her team-high eight blocks in the first set as well. After giving up a five point run mid-set, Moon countered with a five point run of their own to bring the score to 21-20. Mt. Lebanon would score the last four points of the set to draw first blood.

The second set featured the scrappy Lady Tigers again providing the key defense, but they just could not transition the great defensive plays into offensive swings. Mt. Lebanon had many volleys with four or five swings from their heavy hitters, Katherine Peters (15 kills) and Maggie Rimmel (11 kills), in a single point. The Lady Blue Devils limited the unforced errors in the second set and pulled away late to take the 2-0 advantage. They then rode that momentum into the final frame with two seven-point streaks in the decisive set.

The Moon balanced offense was led by a trio of Lady Tigers registering six kills. Bella Montanaro, Jenna Hill, and setter Sarah Ellis tied for the team lead in the kills category. Hill also had four service aces. Cycak was close behind with five kills to go with her eight blocks.

While the Lady Tigers (0-4) are still looking for their first win on the season, they know the talent is there for the team. They are remaining patient and confident for the season ahead, and are looking to get it all put together for their next match.
