For only the fifth time in the thirteen years of the MSA Sports Cup Class AA chase, the torch has been passed to a new champion. Greensburg Central Catholic won the first three years, followed by a five year run by Shady Side Academy and three of the last four years the AA Cup has gone to Quaker Valley with a one year run at the top by Seton-LaSalle two years ago. Now the AA crown is coming to Beaver County thanks to Beaver High School.

After a couple of close calls in recent years, the Bobcats were lifted to the top spot in part because of district championships won in each season…girls tennis in the fall, ice hockey in the winter and a second straight WPIAL title in girls track & field in the spring.

Beaver edged defending champion Quaker Valley by 65. Freeport ended up 10 points ahead of Shady Side Academy for third place while Burrell and Seton-LaSalle ended up in a tie for fifth place. Rounding out the Top ten were Freedom, Washington, Riverside and McGuffey.

The MSA Sports Cup is a challenge to determine the best sports programs for the entire school year throughout the WPIAL schools in each classification, A, AA,  AAA and AAAA.  Points are earned for the success of each Team sport in the fall, winter and spring seasons.  ONLY sports with at least 30% participation throughout the WPIAL schools are included.

Both first-time champion Beaver and runner-up Quaker Valley registered points in 13 of the 20 sports in the competition.
