North Allegheny notebook: Logan Kushner named WPIAL scholar-athlete award winner

North Allegheny senior football player Logan Kushner was honored last week as one of 20 recipients of the 33rd annual WPIAL James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award.

Selected from among 146 nominees, Kushner helped the Tigers to back-to-back WPIAL Class 6A championships.

He was an all-state honoree who also was a three-time all-conference selection.

He was a finalist for the Willie Thrower Award and was picked to play in the PSFCA East-West all-star game.

Kushner threw for 1,877 yards and ran for 1,475 yards last fall.

In the classroom, he carries a 4.26 GPA and is a member of National Honor Society, North Allegheny Gifted Program and TigerThon. He also served as spokesperson for North Allegheny’s football partnership with the American Cancer Society, and worked at North Allegheny youth football camps. He plans to play football at Duquesne where he will study business.

Boys volleyball tops Pine-Richland

North Allegheny’s boys volleyball team improved to 5-0 overall and in Section 2-3A with a 3-0 win over Pine-Richland on April 16.

Game scores were 25-16, 25-21 and 25-20.

Will Robertson had 11 kills, while Peter Bratich had seven and Stone Gaertner had six. Nicolas Carioto had 20 assists, and Will Hahn had 19 digs.

NA baseball rolls past Allderdice

North Allegheny earned a pair of wins over Allderdice last week in Section 1-6A baseball action.

North Allegheny won 14-4 in Game 1. Matthew Parreaguirre went 2 for 4 with a double and five RBIs, Michael Hershberger doubled twice and knocked in a pair, and Nate Persinger got the win.

In Game 2, the Tigers won 13-1. Andrew Dixon doubled and knocked in three runs, August Maslo doubled and drove in two, Miles Pealer had a double and an RBI, and Micolas Varlotta brought home a run with a triple for North Allegheny (8-0, 5-0). Cole Suba picked up the win for the Tigers.

Doubles teams advance to WPIAL tournament

The fourth seed beat the 10th seed in an all-North Allegheny section doubles final in an unpredictable bracket of the Section 2-3A doubles tournament April 17.

The Tigers’ Srivatsav Thirumala and Shivum Telang beat brothers Adithya Ramadas Guptha and Adhav Ramadas, 6-2, 6-3, for the title.

Both North Allegheny tandems advanced to the WPIAL Class 3A doubles tournament.

Thirumala and Telang reached the finals after winning 10-1 and 10-3 in the first two rounds and beating top-seeded Andrew Bocci/Benjamin Busler from Butler, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals.

Ramadas Guptha and Ramadas, the No. 10 seed, won 10-4 and 10-6 in the first two rounds before beating Pine-Richland’s Ian Hurt and Udi Akolkar, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals.

The WPIAL doubles tournament was held earlier this week at North Allegheny.
