Norwin girls soccer coach Ashley DeVito had a name for her team’s defensive mission before Wednesday night’s Section 1-4A game at Latrobe.

“Operation Clean Sheet” was a success.

The Lady Knights were met with little resistance as they pinned up their eighth shutout of the season with their 10th consecutive victory, a 4-0 gem to open October at chilly Rossi Field.

First-place and No. 5-ranked Norwin (10-2, 8-0), which moved closer to its first section title since 2019, has outscored section opponents 46-1. The lone goal was scored by Latrobe (6-6, 5-3) earlier this season in a 3-1 Knights home win.

The Wildcats, who began the night tied for second place with Penn-Trafford, couldn’t get around the Knights’ back line in the rematch. There were no breakdowns or breakaways, and senior goalkeeper Rebecca Kostrobola made four saves for the Knights, who scored all four goals in the first half.

“We take a lot of pride in (shutouts),” said Norwin senior defender Cam Reed, who scored the fourth goal just before halftime. “We lost to them last year in the first round (of section play). This was a team effort. Our back line takes care of each other. Our offense has been awesome.”

Latrobe, which continues to work around depth issues caused by a 19-player roster, saw a five-game winning streak end. The Wildcats during the streak had outscored teams 35-1.

Norwin has 36 players and substitutes with small armies.

“We made four big breakdowns, and they took advantage of all four,” Latrobe coach Jamie Morrison-Campbell said. “We battled, but we couldn’t capitalize. We lost the rhythm of the game.”

Two goals were scored by freshmen, which speaks to the Knights’ youthful talent and depth.

McKenzie Carpenter and Leesia Phetsomphou found the back of the net, the latter scoring on a breakaway in the 33rd minute.

“Our girls rally around each other,” DeVito said. “They are confident and play for one another, no matter their year or position. Every girl comes in ready to play.”

Senior GiGi Fuchel opened the scoring 15 minutes in, taking a dump off from senior Nicole Bown near the 10-yard line and sending a right-footed shot past Wildcats senior keeper Gianna Trunzo, who this week committed to Chatham.

Carpenter made it 2-0 in the 27th minute, again scoring in close off a cross from senior Bella Buscemi.

“Our younger girls have been really impressive,” Reed said. “There are 14-year-olds playing against 18-year-olds. I know when I leave (the program), they are going to keep doing great things.”

Phetsomphou found herself wide open on the left wing and, after Trunzo flared out to defend, bumped a slow-rolling shot into an open net for a 3-0 advantage.

Reed capped the scoring when she headed in a well-served corner from sophomore Neeve Graham in the 39th minute.

Norwin buckled down defensively in the second half and played keep-away to prevent momentum for the Wildcats.

“It was chippy in the second half,” DeVito said. “We stayed focused. We play a quality brand. When we put the ball on the turf we can play with anybody.”

Trunzo made four saves for Latrobe.
