Norwin notebook: Baseball team wins opener

Jackson Huss went 2 for 3 and drove in four runs to pace the Norwin baseball team to a 9-4 victory on the road at Pine-Richland.

Matt O’Neil added a hit and two RBIs for Norwin in the season-opening victory.

The Knights were primed to begin section play, where teams in Class 6A play three-game series.

Softball underway

Dodging cold temperatures and wet field conditions, Norwin softball went 1-1 its first two games.

The season opener was a 6-2 victory over Mt. Pleasant that saw the Lady Knights score five times in the top of the seventh. Diem Wardzinski and Josey Michalski homered, with Michalski adding a double.

In a 4-3 loss at Connellsville, Bailey Snowberger went 2 for 4 with a double, while Michalski and Rachel Minteer homered.

At the net

Jackson Genicola delivered a career-high 29 kills to pace the Norwin boys volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Baldwin the season opener. Troy Horvath had 45 assists, and Lucas Churchfield added 19 digs in the win.

Norwin went on to win its 17-team tournament, taking the Gold Division with a 28-20 victory against Butler in the finals. The Knights defeated Thomas Jefferson and Altoona to reach the title match.

Tennis falls

Norwin’s boys tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to Mt. Pleasant.

The lone win for the Knights came at No. 2 doubles where Jaxson Momeyer and Daniel Metzger teamed up for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nico Pisula and Tyler Kurtz.

Forever Young

The U.S. Association of Blind Athletes announced Callahan Young of North Huntingdon as one of the 15 members of the 2024 USA Goalball Men’ National Team.
