Norwin showed some fight in its first football game of the season.

The Knights fell behind early and rallied to tie it at halftime, but ultimately fell to host Upper St. Clair, 24-21.

Sophomore quarterback Tristyn Tavares completed 12 of 27 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to senior wide receiver Jackson Pons.

Norwin took a 21-14 lead in the third quarter on Pons’ second score.

But the Panthers made a field goal and scored on a late pass to push ahead.

A Miami (Ohio) commit, Pons caught scoring throws of 41 and 13 yards, while Jake Sincak also pulled in a 46-yard TD reception.

Senior Luke Denny had an interception.

Nice start

The Class 4A No. 5 Norwin boys soccer team opened with an impressive win at the Intersection Kickoff Tournament at Seneca Valley, racing past Chartiers Valley, 5-1.

Daniel Maddock had a four-goal season debut, while Owen Christopher also fired in a goal. Assists went to Rick Zappone, Alex Rigone and Alex Brown.

Norwin followed with a 5-1 loss to No. 4 Seneca Valley. Christopher had the lone goal for the Knights.
