Norwin notebook: Knights track and field teams win indoor titles

The Norwin boys and girls indoor track and field teams are champions for the first time.
Both won titles at the Tri-State Track and Field Coaches Association championships at the Edinboro Bubble.
Ryan Schiller won the 60-meter dash in 8.14 seconds, Luke Simpson was first in the mile in 4 minutes, 26.18 seconds, and Nicholas Bogner won the long jump in 21 feet, 5.35 inches to lead the boys.
Evan Pfeifer finished eighth in the triple jump at 38-1; Thomas Gaydos was eighth in the 3,000-meter run in 9:06.43; Alexander Irwin took eighth in the pole vault (13-1); the 1,600 relay of Bognar, Eliezer Nicolas, Tyler Beck and Schiller came in second (3:31.43); Nicolas was sixth in the 400 (52.02); while the boys distance medley relay of Alexander Barrett, Jeremiah Francis, Benjamin McBride and Enzo Jiancristofaro took seventh in 11:15.23.
Jiancristoforo also was eighth, and McBride 11th in the mile.
For the girls, Annie Czajkowski was second in the 3,000-meter run (10:12.64), and the 800 relay of Myla McCabe, Karina Karadus, Autumn Stoken and Melani Schmidt won a title in 1:47.06.
McCabe also finished seventh in the 400 (1:00.41), Alex Oestreich came in seventh in the triple jump (34-2.5), Brandi Brozeski took second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.20) and Karadus was seventh in the same event (9.60), Schmidt was second in the 200 (25.62), and the 3,200 relay of Emily Dansak, Addison Farrah, Jillian Rybe and Czajkowski was third in 9:51.09.
Maddock to SVC
Norwin soccer standout Daniel Maddock committed to play in the Division III Presidents’ Athletics Conference at Saint Vincent. Maddock finished with 58 goals and 35 assists in his career, and helped Norwin win a WPIAL championship.
Runner-up finish
Norwin’s Kali Siegel was the second-place finisher at the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League championship.
Siegel reached the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Ashley Bensur of Hempfield, 189-181.
Siegel had the third-best qualifying score of 614.

Baseball
IUP: Junior outfielder Elijah Dunn hit a solo home run in his first at-bat of the season as the Crimson Hawks fell to USC Aiken, 6-5.
Dunn started 31 of 38 games last year and hit .233 with five homers and 49 RBIs.
Mercyhurst: Senior outfielder Eric Chorba was named a NEC Prime Performer after he hit .364 with a double, home run and two RBI in the Lakers’ first two games.
Pitt: Junior Jake Kendro delivered a two-run single as the Panthers defeated Monmouth, 6-1, to improve to 4-0.
Wrestling
Bucknell: Fifth-year 133-pounder Kurt Phipps picked up a 15-5 major decision to give the Bison an early lead, but Columbia rallied for a 25-16 victory.
Women’s swimming
Clarion: Jordan Kutchak helped the 400-yard freestyle relay to a second-place finish at the PSAC Championships with a time of 3:27.10.
Men’s basketball
Pitt-Johnstown: Sophomore Adam Bilinsky scored 10 points and went 5 for 5 at the foul line, but UPJ (11-14, 7-11 PSAC) fell to Cal (Pa.), 91-79.
