Norwin’s Tulenko glides into PIAA championships

Norwin sophomore Ethan Tulenko entered the season hoping just to make a qualifying cut for the WPIAL Class AAA boys swimming championship meet March 1-2 at Pitt's Trees Pool.

Tulenko did better, making it to states, too.

Tulenko (21.53 seconds) was seeded sixth among time qualifiers in the 50-yard freestyle for the PIAA championship Wednesday and Thursday at Bucknell. Overall, he is seeded 19th.

Tulenko placed sixth at WPIALs, earning a medal.

He was looking forward to his first state meet and dropping more time.

He said he was not nervous but excited about what is to come.

Norwin assistant coach Laurie Federovich said fundamentals would be key.

“We are focusing on his starts and turns during practices and building back up some yardage since coming off of his taper,” she said. “With Ethan's work ethic, coupled with his drive and determination, I believe he can make things happen.

“It's a matter of him hitting his start and turn and, when he does, I foresee him making it in the top 16.”

Federovich said Tulenko had personal best times in all his races at WPIALs.

He placed 13th in the 100 freestyle (48.10) and was part of the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.73) and 200 medley relay (1:40.74) teams that came in 12th and 14th.

He was seeded 10th in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Tulenko competed only in a relay at WPIALs last season.

“I am so proud he made it as far as he did,” Federovich said.
