PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships – Day Two

Derry’s Jimmy Gulibon is on the brink of becoming only the tenth athlete in 75 years of Pennsylvania wrestling history to win four individual state titles. The Trojans’ senior advanced to Saturday afternoon’s 126-pound final with quarterfinal and semifinal victories over Hanover’s Ian Brown, 8-1, and Ridgway’s Corey Bush, 14-4, on Friday at the GIANT Center in Hershey.

It has been sixteen years since another WPIAL wrestler, McGuffey’s Jeremy Hunter, last won his fourth state crown in 1996. The eight other wrestlers to accomplish this feat are Jim Conklin, Waynesburg (1943); Jerry Maurey, Clearfield (1950); Mike Johnson, Lock Haven (1961); Matt Gerhard, Catasauqua (1984); Ty Moore, North Allegheny (1990); John Hughes, Benton (1991); Cary Kolat, Jefferson Morgan (1992); and Bob Crawford, Milton (1993). The PIAA individual wrestling championships were first contested in 1938.

Gulibon, a Penn State recruit, will face a familiar foe in the championship bout in Keystone Oaks’ Nick Zanetta. The Golden Eagles’ junior was a 6-4 winner over Lake Lehman’s Austin Harry in the quarterfinals and was victorious over Smethport’s Karl Lightner in his semifinal bout, 4-3. Gulibon defeated Zanetta in the WPIAL Class AA Championships two weeks ago, 11-4, and at the PIAA Southwest Regional tournament last Saturday, 11-3.

Burrell’s Dakota DesLauriers (45-0) advanced to the finals at 182 pounds and will face Grove City’s Wes Phipps (39-0) in a much-anticipated battle of undefeated wrestlers. DesLauriers pinned Mercer’s Kyle Mariacher late in the second period of his quarterfinal bout and scored a 12-3 major decision over Greenville’s Tyler Landfried in the semifinals.

Burgettstown’s Francis Mizia will compete for a gold medal at 160 pounds after upsetting #2-ranked and undefeated Kurt Meske of Central Columbia, 3-1, in the semifinals. The Blue Devils’ senior will wrestle Forest Hills’ Cody Law in the championship final. Mizia will attempt to avenge a 4-2 semifinal loss suffered at the hands of Law at last Saturday’s PIAA Southwest Regional tournament.

Chartiers-Houston heavyweight Nate Grandelis also advanced to the finals and will face Mifflinburg’s Nazar Mironenko, a 6-3 semifinal winner in double overtime over Fort Cherry’s Corey Garry. You couldn’t blame Grandelis one bit if he was cheering for Mironenko to pull out the victory. Garry defeated Grandelis all five times times the two have wrestled this season.

It’s hard to imagine that any wrestler in Hershey has worked harder than Grandelis this weekend. The Bucs’ senior pinned his first two opponents, one in the ultimate tie-breaker period and the other late in the second overtime. Those two bouts alone totaled over sixteen minutes of competition! Grandelis then scored a rather conventional six minute 3-1 decision over Reynolds’ Blake Heim in the semifinals.

Kittanning’s Jason Nolf suffered the first defeat of his career in a 6-4 semifinal loss at 113 pounds to Trinity’s Ryan Diehl. A 2011 transfer to the Camp Hill, Pennsylvania high school and a two-time West Virginia state champion, Diehl controlled the bout with two takedowns in the first period and a reversal in the third period. Nolf could only manage four escapes during the match. But the Wildcats’ sophomore did rebound with a 6-1 fourth round consolation win over Ligonier Valley’s Josh Patrick to land himself in tomorrow’s third place match against Benton’s Matt Welliver. Nolf is now 86-1 in his two years of varsity wrestling. The only other WPIAL wrestler advancing to a bronze medal bout was Southmoreland’s Austin Griffiths (106).

Fifth place consolation match participants from the WPIAL include Charleroi’s Josh Kwasny (132), South Fayette’s Mike Fetchet (160), Jefferson-Morgan’s Dustin Conti (170), Southmoreland’s Jordan Kitta (195), and Fort Cherry’s Corey Garry (285).

WPIAL athletes that will compete for seventh place honors are Burgettstown’s Austin McDermitt (106), Beth-Center’s Zach Swarrow (113), Charleroi’s Aaron Toth (126), South Side Beaver’s Shane Gentry (132), and Fort Cherry’s Greg Kumer (220).
Bethlehem Catholic is running away with the Class AA team title with 96 points. Reynolds is a distant second with 57.5, while Benton and Fort LeBoeuf are tied for third place with 50 points. Chartiers-Houston, tied for twelfth place with Pen Argyl with 27 points, is the top WPIAL squad in the team standings.
The Class AA finals will begin at 2:00pm on Saturday. A new four-mat format will be used by the PIAA for the finals in both classifications this year. The championship bouts, along with the medal round matches for third, fifth, and seventh place will all be contested simultaneously.

Big Macs Build Large Lead, 14 WPIAL Class AAA Advance to Semis
Continuing its dream season, Canon-McMillan dominated the second day of competition at the 2012 PIAA Wrestling Championships on Friday at the GIANT Center in Hershey. The Big Macs, with 58 team points, have built a commanding 28-point lead over their closest competitor, Central Dauphin. All eight of Canon-McMillan’s state qualifiers have already earned All-State honors by placing among the top eight wrestlers in their respective weight classes.

With victories in the quarterfinals, five Canon-McMillan wrestlers advanced to the semifinal round to be contested on Saturday morning. Dalton Macri (113 pounds), Conner Schram (120), Solomon Chishko (138), Cody Wiercioch (170), and Cody Klempay (285) are all just one win away from competing in the gold medal bouts. Winning first round consolation bouts for the Big Macs were Colt Shorts (126), Dario Dobbin (145), and Alex Campbell (220).
Franklin Regional, in third place with 26 team points, had two wrestlers advance to the semifinals and two are still alive in the consolation brackets. Michael Kemerer (106) and Josh Maruca (126) won their quarterfinal bouts, while Tyler Smith (120) and Josh Shields (132) will wrestle in the second round consolations. Smith lost to the Pittsburgh City League champion, Godwyn Nyama of Brashear, in the quarterfinals, 7-1. The Panthers’ sophomore, however, bounced back with a 10-0 major decision over Clearfield’s Christian Stone in a second round consolation bout.
Other WPIAL Class AAA wrestlers to move on to the semifinals were North Allegheny’s Dom Forys (106), Upper St. Clair seniors Mackenzie McGuire (132) and Austin Wilding (160), Kiski Area’s Matt McCutcheon (182), Hampton’s Jake Hart (195), and Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Perry Hills (195).

After nearly being pinned in the second period of his quarterfinal bout, Kiski Area sophomore heavyweight Shane Kuhn turned Chambersburg’s Dawson Peck, ranked #1 in the state, to his back and recorded a fall with 33 seconds remaining in the third period.
Nearly inconceivable for a wrestling program of its stature, Kiski Area has never had an individual state champion. The Cavaliers’ big men, Kuhn and McCutcheon, have the opportunity on Saturday of knocking that monkey right off the back of Chuck Turskey, the all-time dual meet victory leader among WPIAL coaches.

In all, thirty WPIAL Class AAA wrestlers have already locked up All-State recognition by placing among the top eight wrestlers in their respective weight classes.

Class AAA action will resume in Hershey on Saturday at 9:00am with the semifinals and third round consolation bouts, followed by the fourth round consolation matches. The finals are scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.
