The first round of the PIAA boys volleyball and boys and girls lacrosse playoffs Tuesday delivered some surprises involving WPIAL teams.

In boys volleyball, perennial state power North Allegheny, winners of four straight state championships between 2018-2022, lost in the opening round for a second straight year.

The Tigers fell to District 3 runner-up Warwick, 3-1.

While only two WPIAL boys volleyball teams made it out of the first round, the District 7 boys and girls lacrosse teams enjoyed rare success.

Only the Mars boys lacrosse team from the WPIAL has ever played for a PIAA crown in boys or girls lacrosse.

The Fightin’ Planets boys program finished second in 2021 and 2023 and won PIAA gold in 2022.

Mars was one of seven WPIAL teams to win its state opener Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals Saturday.

Here are the sites and times for the PIAA boys volleyball, boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse quarterfinals set for Saturday.
