The WPIAL put together a strong showing on day one in AAA, with half of its wrestlers (28 of 56) advancing into the quarterfinals. Of the 28 wrestlers who dropped into the consolations, only 6 were eliminated from the tournament.

Wrestlers from the WPIAL were able to pull a couple upsets, but also had champions from a week ago get upset as well. The wrestlers to pull the upsets were Dominic Means of Pittsburgh Central Catholic at 138, who beat South Central Champion Clayton Ulrey of Lower Dauphin 8-6. At 152, Brock Godzin of Belle Vernon defeated South East Champion Chase Stephens of Coatesville 6-4 in overtime. The third was Jake Slinger of Upper St. Clair at 220, where he beat North East Champion Evan Callahan of Freedom by fall in 3:31.

A pair of WPIAL Champions did fall in the winners bracket. The first was Caleb Morris of Waynesburg. He dropped a 5-0 decision to Jimmy Hoffman of Hazelton. While that may not be a surprise, as Hoffman is a returning state runner-up, it was a surprise for Morris to lose again in the consolations and be eliminated. Morris was hit by two headlocks and pinned in 2:27 by Tommy Traver of Tunkhannock. The other WPIAL Champion to lose was Eric Hong of North Allegheny. His 7-3 loss to Ryan Resnick of Owen J. Roberts gave Hong his first loss of the season.

AAA quarterfinals and second round consolations will begin Friday at 2:15 PM. You can hear all the action here on the MSA Sports Network.
