The expectation coming in to the Giant Center in Hershey was for the world to see history. But the history the crowd seen was certainly unexpected. At 126, Spencer Lee of Franklin Regional was looking to become the 13th wrestler in PIAA history to win four state championships. In his way was undefeated South Central champion Austin DeSanto of Exeter Township. The two battled for much of the match with DeSanto scoring last, a takedown just as the buzzer sounded to defeat Lee and shock the world, 6-5. Lee, who was wrestling with a knee brace, gave word to the media after his match that he had been wrestling all postseason with a complete tear of his ACL.

With Lee’s loss, he became the 44th three time PIAA champion. The 45th wasn’t far behind. Cameron Coy of Penn Trafford won his third state title with a win over Carter Starocci of Cathedral Prep 5-2. Coy picked up two takedowns en route to claiming his third gold medal.

There were a pair of all WPIAL finals going for state gold. The first was at 113, where Sam Hillegas of North Hills and Louis Newell of Seneca Valley wrestled for the third week in a row. Hillegas grabbed two takedowns, the second coming late in the third period, to beat Newell for the third straight week, this time 5-2, to cap his freshman campaign undefeated and as a state champion. The other all WPIAL final was at 285, where Brendan Furman of Canon McMillan met Isaac Reid of Kiski Area for the sixth time this season. Furman dominated on his feet, also grabbing two takedowns, in his 5-3 win to end the season as a state champion.

Two additional wrestlers added gold medals from the WPIAL. One was Jake Woodley of North Allegheny at 195, who beat Ethan Laird of General McLane 3-1. The win gave Woodley his second state title. The other was Jarod Verkleeren of Hempfield at 145. Verkleeren poured on the points to win by major decision 16-5 over Brock Port of Bellefonte.

For a full recap of the AAA PIAA Championships, listen in to Inside the WPIAL Wrestling Circle, Monday night at 7:00 PM, on the MSA Sports Network. We will be joined by Sam Hillegas of North Hills, Jarod Verkleeren of Hempfield, Cameron Coy of Penn Trafford, Jake Woodley of North Allegheny, and Brendan Furman of Canon McMillan.
