Recruiting is beginning to ramp up for Peyton Murray.

The senior shot put and discus thrower at Hempfield has been contacted by a number of Division I college programs and has drawn four scholarship offers with more likely on the way.

Indiana was his first offer, followed by Iowa. This week, schools closer to home reached out as Pitt and Penn State offered on back-to-back days.

“I expected those schools to offer because those were the ones that I had official visits scheduled for and that have been recruiting me for a while now,” Murray said. “I figured at one point it would pick up, but it has been a little surprising that three offers have come in the last three days.”

Penn and Harvard also have offered him spots, with guaranteed acceptance into the Ivy League schools.

Before he makes a decision, Murray wants to make visits. He will check out Kentucky this weekend and Notre Dame the next.

“It’s very exciting,” he said. “I’m ready to find out where I’m going, though.”

Murray won the PIAA Class 3A discus championships last season and took second in the shot put. He is a two-time WPIAL discus champion.

He said he will commit to a school before Nov. 8, which marks the beginning of the NCAA’s early signing period.
