Quaker Valley stepped outside of section play April 30 and “traveled” to an away game against a Class A opponent, rival Sewickley Academy.

Despite a late-game charge by the home team, QV prevailed to win a hard-fought 11-9 decision.

The Quakers held leads of 5-2, 6-4 and 11-5 before Sewickley rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

QV was led by sophomore first baseman Mike Semonik, who went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. He also scored twice.

Sophomore right fielder Holden Kirkham had two hits — including a homer — and two RBIs in three at-bats and scored one run.

Freshman DH Rocco Fardo went 2 for 4 and scored twice. Sophomore hurler Kolton Johnson drove in two runs.

Johnson, the winning pitcher, tossed the first four innings, surrendering three hits, five walks and just one earned run while striking out two. Sophomore pitcher Damien McClay picked up a save.

For Sewickley, David Young, a junior second baseman, had one hit in four plate appearances, scored once and collected two RBIs.

Sophomore first baseman Charlie Scally went 1 for 3, scored twice and knocked in one run.

Freshman left fielder Caden Hawkins also scored twice for the Panthers.

There were 16 walks issued in the game. QV drew seven free passes; Sewickley piled up nine.

Both clubs qualified for the WPIAL playoffs.

QV ended up in fourth in Section 1-3A. The Quakers finished as the top offensive team in Class 3A, averaging 10.3 runs per game.

Sewickley secured third place in Section 3-A. Eden Christian Academy won the section crown with an 8-0 record.

Panthers earn revenge

The next day, Sewickley Academy gained a bit of revenge as the Panthers softball team blanked visiting Quaker Valley, 9-0, in rain-shortened nonsection game that was stopped in the bottom of the sixth because of rain.

Junior outfielder Cherish Wilson and junior shortstop Keira Church each clouted two hits and scored one run for Sewickley. Wilson belted a double in the fifth inning and finished with three RBIs in the game. Church had two RBIs

Sophie Crichton, a junior infielder, had a unique day at the plate, walking three times in three plate appearances, scoring twice and tacking on one RBI.

Along with Wilson and Church, sophomore catcher Gabby Edmunds, winning pitcher Charlotte Andrews and senior outfielder V.J. Jeevan scored a run apiece.

Andrews allowed just two hits, fanned 17 — striking out the side in five of the game’s six innings — and walked six.

Andrews, a right-handed sophomore hurler, ended the regular season with a 7-3 record, 126 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings and a 1.35 ERA.

The three seniors on this year’s club — second baseman Saana Grant, Jeevan and outfielder Marin Edmunds — were honored prior to the start of the game.

Sewickley (9-3, 7-3) wrapped up the regular season in a tie for second with South Side in Section 1-A and WPIAL playoff-bound.

For QV, senior center fielder Leah Weisser, the team’s leadoff hitter, and senior third baseman Gemma Wiegand, the No. 2 hitter in the lineup, both had singles against Sewickley.

The Quakers (3-11, 2-8) finished fifth in Section 2-3A.
