Riverview 6-foot-2, 245-pound offensive lineman Addison Pascal doesn’t desire to employ a flashy game plan. A ground-based, grinding approach has served the Raiders fine.

Riverview took advantage of a worn-down Greensburg Central Catholic football team Saturday at Riverside Park, powering to a 26-7 Eastern Conference win.

The Raiders ran the ball 40 times, producing 242 yards.

“We could run the ball every play of the game if it was up to me,” Pascal said.

The win was a vital one in a highly competitive conference. The Raiders (4-2, 2-1) moved themselves into third place and are in position to make the WPIAL Class A playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Senior offensive lineman Vincent DelRosso said the Raiders were motivated to come away with a win on senior day.

“There is no doubt that it was an emotional game,” DelRosso said. “Our group of seniors is a tight-knight group, and we’ve been playing together since seventh or eight grade. I feel like the fact is that we are trying to do what Riverview hasn’t done in a while, and that’s been our mission statement since we were in eighth grade.”

The Centurions (3-3, 1-2) played without leading rusher and receiver Samir Crosby. GCC coach John Thompson said Crosby was banged up in the Centurions’ 34-6 win over Brentwood last week. Crosby wasn’t all GCC was missing.

“We had a lot of guys out of position,” Thompson said. “More than Samir, we have five starters out. It changed a lot as far as personnel. We tried to keep it as simple as possible.”

The simplicity served the Centurions well on their opening drive. Bobby Smithnosky connected on a few passes and drove GCC inside the Riverview 30. However, the Centurions’ drive ended with a missed field goal.

Riverview’s first touchdown was set up on a fumble recovery. Quarterback Connor Kmetz scored on a 1-yard run with 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

“Frankly, I feel like it’s a lot more of our type of game,” DelRosso said. “We’ve found success on the ground. We’ve done what works for us.”

The Raiders doubled their lead in the second quarter when Kaden Levy scored on a 3-yard run. Levy, who finished with 70 rushing yards, scored twice for the Raiders. Miles Duncan led Riverview with 87 yards on 17 carries.

Raiders coach Trevor George said they were keeping things simple.

“The philosophy of taking what the defense gives you,” George said. “The kids bought into the gameplan and did a great job of executing it.”

GCC’s offense never quite got going. The Centurions finished with 125 total yards of offense.

“We had way too many errors mentally,” Thompson said. “Physically, we didn’t come ready to play,”

GCC’s lone touchdown came on a 79-yard kickoff return by Blase Bugosh in the third quarter, which cut the lead to 20-7. Riverview’s final score was also set up by a fumble recovery late in the fourth quarter.

Max Kratt finished the Raiders’ final touchdown drive early in the fourth quarter by scoring on a 4-yard pop pass from Kmetz.

“I feel like we are finding out who we are,” Pascal said. “I feel like we started off the year, and we are doing a lot of things to figure out what we do the best. I feel like we can do a lot of things well.”
