Former Serra Catholic assistant coach Akeeme Robinson was hired as head coach, the school announced Wednesday.

Robinson replaces Jose Regus, who resigned after eight seasons and won a WPIAL title in 2021. Robinson, a Serra Catholic assistant from 2017-22, was defensive coordinator when the Eagles won the Class 2A title.

“Known for building elite defensive units, his strategic leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence were instrumental in Serra’s legendary championship, where the defense became the foundation of their success,” the school said in a statement announcing Robinson as the team’s new coach.

Serra Catholic forced nine turnovers in a 35-12 win over Beaver Falls in the 2021 finals. Regus went 53-35 in eight seasons and reached the playoffs seven times, while also battling a rare neurological disorder.

Regus was diagnosed in 2021 with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), which caused weakening of the arms and legs. He used a wheelchair during the team’s championship run, but his health and mobility had improved since.

The Eagles are coming off a 3-7 season that included a 2-4 conference mark in the Black Hills.

Robinson played football at Central Catholic and started his coaching career as an assistant at Penn Hills.
