Shaler athletes step to podium at Butler Invitational

Conquering the Butler Invitational wasn't going to happen for the Shaler track team.
What the Titans were focused on was using the event a barometer for where they are.
“The kids we expected to perform well, did well,” Shaler coach James Ryan said. “We took 23 kids, so we weren't expecting to make waves as a team. We are hoping to build the program so we can make waves as individuals and as a team.”
Not that Shaler left Art Bernardi Stadium empty-handed. Maura Fisher finished second in the javelin, John Franklin placed third in the 110 hurdles, and Claire Schreiber and Lydia Valentine finished in sixth place in the long jump and shot put, respectively.
Reaching the medal stand in the throws was a strong return to the sport for Valentine, who also plays tennis. She returned this season after not competing since middle school.
Ryan said various members of the track coaching staff attempted to get Valentine back to the team during her first two years of high school.
Valentine threw a season-high 34 feet during a dual meet with North Allegheny last Tuesday. At the Butler Invitational, Valentine threw a little over 32.
“I think she's a natural athlete,” Ryan said. “She has the concept of throwing the shot put. She has the required skill and speed. Add in a couple tweaks, and she should be able to add a few feet.”
Fisher also saw major gains after narrowly missing out on the WPIAL Class AAA meet last season. Ryan felt she could throw 115 feet this season, and she came in at 114 at the Butler Invitational.
“I think her throw was in first place until the final round,” Ryan said. “I think she's improved because of her competitive nature. She's a multi-sport athlete and plays basketball and track. She continues to work hard to continue to get better.”
Shaler will have another chance to get back on the podium when it competes in the Pine-Richland Invitational on May 4.
