Most coaches will tell you the way to win in November is pound the ball on the ground and play strong defense. Well the strong defense thing is universal in football, however this is not your big brothers three yards and a cloud of rubber pellets high school football. While the WPIAL came up empty in sending a team to the state finals for only the second time PIAA girls volleyball history, it turned out to be a golden postseason for neighboring teams from District 9 and District 10. Clarion from D-9 won the Class A state championship Saturday while Fort LeBoeuf from D-10 captured the Class AA crown. The NCAA playoffs kicked off in Division II and III, regular season action came to a conclusion in the NEC.Here are recaps of all the games, including one heard here on the Network:NCAA Division II Playoffs/First Round: IUP 27 - Shepherd 17 The 11th ranked Crimson Hawks move onto the second round with the home victory at George P. Miller Stadium. De'Antwan Williams carried 30 times for 152 yards and a score as IUP moves on to the second round. IUP scored first, taking advantage of a Jihad Rasheed fumble, Greg Meisner recovered and set up the Crimson Hawks at the 28 yard line. The Countdown to the Road to Hershey continues with one week before the start of the state high school football playoffs. Final Four Friday is in the books on the Highway to Heinz, but the five other Western Pa districts also are into their gridiron postseason. Jerry Holzhauser has retired as head coach of the Laurel Spartans football team after nine seasons. Holzhauser racked up a 54-35 record over that time, including five playoff berth, including a 2009 trip to the semifinals.Laurel finished 5-4 overall this season and 4-4 in the Big Seven Conference, behind Rochester, Sto-Rox, Neshannock and Union, all four advanced to the WPIAL quarterfinals with Neshannock and Sto-Rox still alive in Friday's Semifinals.Before becoming the head coach, Holzhauser was an assistant to George Miles. District College Football Preview for Saturday, November 17th
Now that the season is over, on to the post-season for Division II and III schools as IUP and W & J begin their quest for a national championship.In the Northeast Conference, Wagner looks to wrap up the conference title and hold defending champion Albany at bay. The Highway to Heinz continues toward the final exit and Final Four Friday this week here on the MSA Sports Network. Two district college teams have qualified for the 2012 NCAA football playoffs.In Division II, Indiana University of Pennsylvania will make their first trip to the post-season since 2007. The IUP Crimson Hawks, 10-1, are seeded third in Super Region I and will host 8-2 Shepherd. This match up is a rematch of a 2007 Quarterfinals game won by the Rams. Shepherd won the WVIAC title, clinching a berth with a victory Saturday over Fairmont State. In Division III, 8-2 Washington & Jefferson received the automatic berth from the PAC after beating Waynesburg Saturday. The Presidents will travel to 9-1 Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
