If you were to picture the WPIAL nine-week regular season, you would envision four weeks of climbing the mountain top, then four weeks of descending either into the district playoffs or into a deep dark crevasse of postseason emptiness. That would mean Week Five is right at the summit of this high school football mountain. Hello, hello, hello is there anybody out there? With apologies to Pink Floyd, that could be the theme of the very light Saturday high school football schedule around the WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League. Three WPIAL conference games featuring two unbeaten teams and three winless squads, plus another City League non-conference tilt. Not only did Seneca Valley’s 34-7 victory against Pittsburgh Central Catholic Thursday night give Seneca Valley a leg up on second place in the Northern Eight Conference, it was a monumental win of sorts for the Raiders. * For the first time in a while, the Raiders won a big game against an upper-echelon Class AAAA team. A year ago, Seneca Valley won a WPIAL playoff game for the first time since 2002. This time, the Raiders defeated a Central Catholic team that was ranked No. 4 in Class AAAA by MSA Sports. * The win broke Central Catholic’s 26-game regular-season winning streak. We cruise past the halfway point this weekend of the WPIAL football season, and big-time matchups abound throughout many of the classifications. The time has come to make some hay if you find your club in a good spot. If your favorite team is in a hole, the time has come to make your move because time waits for no man or football team. We are starting to see huge games that will have monstrous impact on playoff positioning and in one case a game that will likely determine a section championship this week, so let’s hurry along and go Big Game Hunting.

At the end of the season, we won’t be looking back at Week 4 as one of “those” weeks with dramatic moments, miracle finishes and big games. In fact, 62 of the 67 games were decided by at least two touchdowns. After finishing 7th as a freshman and tied for 2nd last year as a sophomore, Leechburg junior Matt Barto won the 2012 WPIAL Boys Class AA Individual Golf Championship Monday afternoon at the Youghiogheny Country Club in McKeesport. Barto fired a one-over 73 to edge Jesse Vensel of McGuffey, Darren Carone of Shenango and Matt Cioffi of Neshannock by two strokes.Barto was in the day's first group and had to wait for the other 14 groups to return before being crowned champion. "I was nervous each time a new group would come in," he said afterward. "I worked very hard for this. I thought I had a chance until i bogeyed 15, 16 and 17." On a night lacking a lot of marque punch with only one game involving Top 10 teams going head-to-head, five teams rose from the deck to turn an 0-3 record to a 1-3 mark with their first taste of victory in 2012.
