Beaver Sees Dream Season End With Loss to Loyalsock in PIAA AA Baseball Finals

Bailey Young singled inside the first base bag to score pinch-runner Caleb Robbins to give the Loyalsock Lancers their second PIAA baseball championship, defeating the Beaver Bobcats 5-4 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in the Class AA title game.It was the second trip to the state title game for Beaver, falling 2-1 to Reading in the 1983 Class AAA championship, the Bobcats were led by future major leaguer John Burkett.Beaver had tied the game in the top of the seventh when Nick Hineman singled home Austin Logan with two outs. Logan led off the inning with a marathon at-bat, finally being hit by the eighth pitch from Kyle Datres.Williams Valley Walks All Over Neshannock as Lancers Lose in PIAA ‘A’ Title Game
If you would have asked the over one thousand fans in attendance today at Nittany Lion Softball Park, not even the most rabid Williams Valley fan would have predicted the outcome. The Vikings were patient at the plate, drawing eleven walks, six coming with the bases loaded as the District 11 champions handed the WPIAL Champion Neshannock Lancers a 13-0 defeat in six innings at Beard Field. The victory in the Class A Softball championship was the first for Williams Valley in any team sport on the state level.The win may be a prelude of things to come for the Vikings. Coach Lee Reiser has only two seniors on the roster, none were in the starting lineup with two juniors, five sophomores and two freshman taking the field.
In A Marathon, Canon-Mac Wins First State Quad-A Softball Crown
In the third longest game in PIAA softball championship history, the Canon McMillan Big Macs claimed their first Quad-A state title with a 4-3 win over the Neshaminy Redskins in 12 innings. Freshman Linda Rush drove a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence for a two run homer to put the Big Macs up for good. It’s the longest game in Quad-A championship history, overall the longest game was a 14 inning win for Fleetwood over Riverside in the 2001 Class AA championship match up and a twelve inning 1-0 win for Williamsport over Baldwin in the 1989 AA title tilt.Scholastic Notebook – 01/14/2013
Riverside Perfect No More After PIAA AA Title Game Loss To Brandywine Heights
One run was all it took to claim a state championship. The Brandywine Heights Bullets got that run and won their first PIAA Class AA softball title 1-0 over the Riverside Panthers at Beard Field on Friday morning. Senior Megan Olson pitched a dandy, keeping the Panthers hitters off balance all day. The loss spoils the undefeated season for Riverside, who had won 22 straight games and had only allowed seven runs all season.PIAA Softball Championship Previews

Last year, only Neshannock from District 7 returned home from State College with a PIAA softball championship. Now the Lancers are back in the finals, except this time the 2012 Double-A state champs are playing in the 2013 Single-A finals. The Lancers are not alone from the WPIAL in Happy Valley on Friday, as they are joined by 2013 WPIAL Quad-A champion Canon-McMIllan and 2013 WPIAL Double-A champion Riverside, who want to double their gold in-take before ending the season. After Monday turned into a washout for all eight remaining high school softball teams, Tuesday saw the wait was worth it for three of the four WPIAL squads in the state Semifinals. 2013 WPIAL champions Canon-McMillan, Riverside and Neshannock all were victorious Tuesday and will move on to play for state gold on Friday. However Tuesday was the end of the line for Class AAA Ambridge. Monday saw WPIAL AA champion Beaver clinch a spot in the PIAA state finals. Rain late Sunday and early Monday coupled with a shaky forecast forced the PIAA to postpone 15 of it's 16 baseball and softball Semifinals contests. The lone exception was played at high noon Monday at Pullman Park where a rematch of the WPIAL Class AA championship game from two weeks ago was played. The result in Butler was similar to the result in Washington. A pair of dominant WPIAL boys volleyball programs played in the state finals on Saturday with different results. North Allegheny is going to party like its 1999 after beating Pennsbury in four games to capture the schools fifth state boys volleyball championship. The Tigers victory matches their state crowns in 1979, 1987, 1991 and 1999. Meanwhile, Ambridge had to settle for state silver after losing to Northeastern York in four games in the Class AA championship at Penn State University. The Bridgers were trying to win their second boys volleyball title and first since 2009. LaSalle College defeated the three-time defending boys lacrosse state champion Conestoga Pioneers for their second state title. The Explorers, who won the inaugural boys state championship in 2009, were led on Saturday by Matt Rambo's four goals, three of which came in a three minute span in the first quarter. Meanwhile in the girls state lacrosse final, Harriton won their first state crown by defeating the two-time champion Radnor Raiders with a thrilling come from behind overtime victory. Senior Caleigh Foust scored five goals for the Rams, including the overtime championship clinching winner. The South Park baseball and Riverside softball teams did something unusual this week – win a WPIAL title with a perfect record.On Monday, both begin a quest to do something even more rare– win a PIAA title with a perfect record.Since the PIAA started softball and baseball championships in the 1970s, no WPIAL baseball team has won a PIAA title with an undefeated record. Elizabeth Forward came the closest, making the PIAA Semifinals in 2011.While no WPIAL baseball team has won a PIAA title with an undefeated record, three WPIAL softball teams have won PIAA titles with perfect records, but it has been 14 years since it happened.Canon-Mac, Greensburg-Salem, Riverside & Neshannock Win 2013 Softball Titles
In the end, three top-seeds and an unbeaten 3rd-seed were wearing District 7 softball gold. Canon-McMillan repeated as Class AAAA champions. Canon-McMillan Repeats in WPIAL Quad-A Softball

Junior Giorgiana Zeremenko came thru in a big way as the Canon McMillan Big Macs repeat as WPIAL champions with a 5-2 victory over the North Allegheny Tigers in the Quad-A WPIAL championship game at California University’s Lilley Field. Zeremenko hit a three run homer in the fourth and drove in four runs in the game. Senior Alayna Astuto allowed just four hits and struck out nine to pick up her 21st win of the season without a loss.North Allegheny actually took a 1-0 lead in this game, scoring in the bottom of the first. Laura Cotter led off with a double to left, with one out Christine Scherer singled to left, scoring Cotter. But pitcher Alayna Astuto shut down the inning, getting a pair of fly outs to right to end the inning.
