Greensburg-Salem Claims It’s First WPIAL Class AAA Softball Gold

Eleven hits and two big innings, that what it took for Greensburg Salem to pick up it’s first WPIAL softball gold as the Golden Lions defeated the Ambridge Bridgers 8 -0 in the Class AAA championship game at Lilley Field. Jayne Oberdorf allowed just four hits and struck out ten for the win, she has fanned 218 batters this season and picked up her 14th shutout. Kellie Hutchinson went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs. The Golden Lions posted a three spot in the top of the first, Claire Oberdorf led off with a single and was bunted to second. Kellie Hutchinson doubled home Oberdorf, Taylor Mehan followed with a single to plate Hutchinson. With two outs, Maggie Kallock singled up the middle to bring home Mehan.

Wilson & Riverside KO Defending Champ Deer Lakes in WPIAL AA Finals
Riverside senior Kirsten Wilson pitched like a champion the entire 2013 season. Now she has received her just do as she and her Panthers teammate are all winners after beating the 2012 WPIAL Class AA champion Deer Lakes Lancers 5-1 Thursday at Lilley Field at California University of Pennsylvania.Wilson entered the district title game with an 18-0 record and a .043 earned run average with 213 strikeouts and twelve straight shutouts. She picked up where she left off by not allowing a hit until there were two outs in the 6th inning and by then, the Panthers were leading 3-0.

Neshannock Runs Away With WPIAL Class A Softball Championship
The hit parade was out in full force as the Neshannock Lancers pounded out 16 hits in route to their first WPIAL Class A softball championship with a 10-4 victory over the Carmichaels Mighty Mikes at Lilley Field. The Lancers were ousted in the 2012 Class AA semifinals but went on to run thru the PIAA bracket to claim the state championship.Madison Shaffer struck out twelve in picking up her 18th win of the season, the sophomore also was 2 for 4 at the plate with a triple and a double, she drove in three runs. Marissa DeMatteo and Alexandra Fischer both had three hits for Neshannock, now 18-2 on the season.

NA, SP, Beav and WB All Claim 2013 WPIAL Baseball Gold
Four new champions were crowned as the District 7 baseball postseason came to an end. A little WPIAL history was made as South Park became the fifth school to win a baseball championship with an undefeated record. When all was said it done, the Eagles were the only top-seed to win a title while a pair of #2-seeds...North Allegheny in Quad-A and Beaver in Double-A won championships while the party crashers was Class A #5-seed Western Beaver. North Allegheny Knocks Seneca Valley From WPIAL Quad-A Baseball Perch

The North Allegheny Tigers won their seventh WPIAL baseball title with a 4-2 victory over the Seneca Valley Raiders at Consol Energy Park on Wednesday night. Mitchell Machi pitched 6. 1 innings for the win, he was the winner in three consecutive post-season starts. The championship is the first for the Tigers since 2009. Brandon Bergstrom went 2 for 3 at the plate, including a double and started two double plays on defense. Machi credited Bergstrom and all of his fielders for helping him out of jams.The Tigers avenged two 3-2 losses to the Raiders on April 11 and April 25, North Allegheny will take on Hempfield for a second time in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs on Monday. The Tigers shut out the Spartans 3-0 in the WPIAL semifinal round.

Western Beaver Truly Golden In WPIAL Class A Baseball
In an improbable finish to the Class A Baseball championship game, Western Beaver pitcher Nick Miller picked off Santino Platt off second base to end the game and give the Golden Beavers a 3-2 come from behind victory over the OLSH Chargers to claim their second WPIAL championship. Western Beaver scored two runs in the sixth inning to take the lead entering the final frame.The win for Western Beaver give the Golden Beavers their second WPIAL title, they claimed the gold in 2000. Miller picked up the win, going to 7-1 on the season.

WPIAL Softball Consolation Recaps
Eight teams had to wait an extra 24 hours to see if their season would continue after the WPIAL postponed all four softball consolation games from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon. For Hempfield, West Allegheny, Chartiers-Houston and Burgettstown, it was worth the wait as they picked up victories and now move on to the PIAA state softball playoffs while Peters Township, West Mifflin, Beaver and Frazier see their successful 2013 campaign come to an end.

South Park Remains Perfect In Extra Inning AAA Title Game Win

In a game full of missed opportunities, the South Park Eagles came thru when it counted the most, claiming a 4-3 nine inning victory over the Hopewell Vikings to become only the fifth team in WPIAL baseball history to win a district championship as an unbeaten team. Adam Thompson, who was hit for in the eighth inning, reentered the game to draw a bases loaded walk to push the Eagles to the win.The game was the first extra inning title game since Franklin Regional beat Mount Lebanon 9-8 in 2001 to win the Class AAA title in eight innings. It's the first WPIAL baseball title for South Park, the Eagles last made the title game in 2002.

Peters Township Edges SSA to Repeat as WPIAL D-I Girls Lacrosse Champs
Been there, done that for Peters Township, as for the second straight season and the fifth time in ten years, the Indians captured the WPIAL Girls Division I lacrosse championship with a 16-14 victory.This match at Martorelli Stadium in the North Hills between Division I – Section 1 rivals Peters Township and Shady Side Academy was the third game on the season between the pair of Indians.

Shaler Squeeks Past Chartiers Valley for First WPIAL D-II Girls Lacrosse Crown
It may have taken longer than expected for Shaler to capture the WPIAL Girls Division II Lacrosse Championship, but the wait was well worth it for the Titans. The championship match was twice delayed by lightning and Shaler let leads of 7-1 and 12-6 slip away before rallying to defeat the Colts at Martorelli Stadium in the North Hills.Trailing 1-0, Shaler scored 7 unanswered goals to take the lead at 10:58 of the first half. During the seven goal run, the first lighting delay came after Chartiers Valley called a timeout trailing 5-1. The delay lasted about 55 minutes.

North Allegheny Survives Scare to Win 7th WPIAL AAA Boys Volleyball Title in a Row
In the WPIAL Boys AAA Volleyball Championship match the North Allegheny Tigers defeat the  Bethel Park Black Hawks by a 3-2 match score to win their 7th title in a row and their 10th in the last 11 years and 16th overall title.The Tigers took game one 25-17 and made it look easy. At 13-10 they went on a 12-4 run to win. Tommy Keisling the SR OH led the way with his power game.In game two it was close and tied 9-9 before Bethel Park would take control. NA fell apart mid game  as the Blackhawks went on an 8-3 run to go up 21-15. Camden Hay the SR OH came up big to lead the way and his kill gave BP a 5 point lead at 23-18 on their way to a 25-21 game two win to tie the match at 1-1.
