WPIAL Girls Sports Realignment

We all knew it was coming. A major change to the WPIAL high school sports landscape based on the PIAA's decision to increase from four to six classifications in basketball and softball, plus the increase in other sports such as soccer, volleyball and lacrosse. The WPIAL Board of Control approved the various steering committee's re-alignment suggestions starting with the 2016-2017 school year. This alignment also will be for the 2017-2018 school year. WPIAL Alum Q&A – Nolan Cressler

Although the WPIAL has produced some notable NCAA Division I basketball players recently, not many of those athletes could boast that they played meaningful minutes on a team ranked in the top 20 nationally. Former Plum standout Nolan Cressler accomplished that feat earlier this season, though, with Vanderbilt University. Before Cressler's rise to prominence in college, he rewrote the record books for the Plum Mustangs. Cressler holds the all-time scoring mark in school history, with more than 1,500 points. His final two seasons were particularly impressive, as he averaged more than 25 points and 7.5 rebounds as a junior, and slightly increased those marks in his senior campaign.

Welcome to another edition of “PIHL Notebook,” your weekly companion to “The PIHL Power Play” on the MSA Sports Network. PIAA Team Wrestling Playoffs – Day Three Recap
WPIAL champion Belle Vernon (20-2) finished in third place at the PIAA Class AAA Team Wrestling Championships by winning the consolation final over Nazareth, 30-28, on Saturday afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey, PA.

Bethlehem Catholic & Brookville Win 2016 PIAA Team Wrestling Titles
For only the second time in the last nine years and the first time since 2010, a WPIAL team did not bring state gold back from Hershey in the team wrestling playoffs. Bethlehem Catholic won the AAA title after winning four straight AA state championships from 2011 to 2014. District 9 champion Brookville is celebrating their second PIAA state title and first since 1999. The best finish for a WPIAL team was Belle Vernon as the Leopards finished in third place by winning the Class AAA Consolations. PIAA Team Wrestling Playoffs – Day Two Recap
All three WPIAL Class AAA teams remain alive at the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships, but only one will bring home the hardware from Hershey's GIANT Center. Belle Vernon lost Friday evening in the semifinals in a much anticipated showdown with the state's top-ranked team. As a result, the Leopards drop to the consolation bracket and await the winner of a match between the WPIAL's other two representatives, Canon-McMillan (12-3) and Kiski Area (22-2), who will square off on Saturday morning in a third round consolation match at 9:00am .

WPIAL Girls Basketball Preview
There are 73 girls teams that begin the Path to the Pete in the hopes of raising one of the four championships at the Petersen Events Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh on February 26th or 27th. Here are some factoids to help you get ready for the 2016 WPIAL Girls Basketball Playoffs. CLASS AAAA TOP SEED: Norwin (21-0). The Knights are the defending champions and an overwhelming choice as the top seed. They are led by Alayna Gribble, a Pitt recruit who just might be the No. 1 player in the WPIAL this year. Norwin has been impressive offensively, but their defense is absolutely stifling. The Knights allow only 31 points a game. DEFENDING CHAMP: Norwin.

PIAA Team Wrestling Playoffs – Day One Recap

WPIAL qualifiers Belle Vernon, Canon McMillan and Kiski Area all won opening round matches at the PIAA Class AAA Team Wrestling Championships on Thursday evening at the GIANT Center in Hershey. The trio now advances to the:quarterfinal round scheduled to start at 2:00 pm on Friday.

Woodland Hills Three-Peats as WPIAL Team Rifle Champs
The sharp shooters at Woodland Hills High School have earned another gold bulls-eye for the Wolverines. Woodland Hills scored a final total of 800-59x to edge out Hempfield and win a third straight WPIAL Team Rifle championship Wednesday at the Dormont/Mount Lebanon Sportsman's Club in Canonsburg. The Wolverines beat out the Spartans in a close finish after Hempfield ended with a total 800-57x. Butler finished third in the team finals with a score of 799-65x, followed by Waynesburg (799-50x), Mount Lebanon (797-58x) and McGuffey (795-57x).

WPIAL SPORTS SECTION & PLAYOFF STRUCTURE UNVEILED
February 10, 2016
While WPIAL admiinistrators, coaches, players and fans will have to wait until Monday, February 15th for the new WPIAL Six Classification alignments to be announced, the structure of the sections and the playoff format were released on Wednesday. WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley said after investigating what course the WPIAL should take after the PIAA expanded classifications in several sports last fall, the district will follow suit and follow the classes set forth by the state expansion.

MSA Sports Top Ten – WPIAL Boys Basketball Playoff Rankings 2016
February 8, 2016
Our final WPIAL Boys Basketball Top 10 rankings of the season is not really a true rankings, just like the WPIAL Steering Committee doesn't truly rank the teams when putting the brackets together. Sure, the top eights teams are according to perceived rankings, but then a lot of what follows the rest of the way is more fill in the blanks to avoid teams from the same section meeting in Round One. Throw in Preliminary Round games like we'll see in Class AAA and Class AA, and then you really have to dance around to avoid Preliminary and First Round games against teams from the same section. The First Round seed matchups break out this way in this order.
