CTK 2010 – WPIAL AAAA NORTHERN SEVEN Conference Preview

Erie McDowell is back in the Northern Seven Conference. This time for real. In 2006 and 2007, McDowell played a conference schedule, but McDowell could not qualify for the WPIAL playoffs because it was still a District 10 team. The name of the game in girls golf in 2009 was repeats. Nadia Luttner won a second consecutive WPIAL girls golf championship. The Fox Chapel junior became only the sixth girls golfer to win back-to-back individual golf crowns. FINALLY! High school football camps throughout Pennsylvania opened for business on Monday. Last fall, Ronit Yurovsky of Plum and Tanya Timko of Chartiers-Houston captured WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis titles while Olivia Heim and Taylor Perz of Pine-Richland and Susie Soltis and Madeline Leo of Greensburg Central Catholic captured WPIAL Girls Doubles Tennis Gold. In Girls Team Tennis, Peters Township and Sewickley Academy were crowned WPIAL champions in 2009.Virginia Wins 2010 PONY League World Series

Ten of the top baseball teams from around the world made their way to Washington, Pennsylvania this past week to play in the 2010 PONY League World Series. When the dust had settled, Chesterfield County, Virginia was crowned champion. The Ellwood City School Board accepted the resignation of Jason Bumblis on Thursday. Bumblis served the last three seasons at Lincoln High, after coming to Ellwood City from OLSH. Seneca Valley captured a second WPIAL girls soccer title in three years while Springdale finally knocked South Park off of its three year stay atop the WPIAL Class AA world. When the Pittsburgh City League championship game was set, there was no sign of defending champion Brashear and powerhouse Perry. Instead it was Schenley and Oliver that played in a District 8 title game for the ages. The school colors for Gateway are black and gold. However recent history on the gridiron indicates maybe they should be changed to black and silver. The run of three straight WPIAL and two consecutive PIAA state championships came to an end for Thomas Jefferson, which saw their title hopes dashed in the Semifinals by eventual champion West Allegheny. The Indians gold run led to their first football crown since winning three straight in 1999, 2000 and 2001. After watching rival Jeannette bask in the golden glory with back-to-back WPIAL football championships in 2007 and 2008, Greensburg Central Catholic survived a tough Interstate Conference to win a title as a double-digit seed in a deep Class AA tournament. The district championship, captured with a rout of Aliquippa at Heinz Field, was the first in school history for the Centurions.
