Defending PIAA Champ Jason Li Wins First WPIAL Golf Crown

The 2014 state champion is this years 2015 WPIAL Class AA champion. Jason Li of Sewickley Academy finished 12th in last years WPIAL finals, but rose to the top Thursday to claim the AA titlle with a 2-over par 72 in very windy conditions at the Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley. Li was in the last group to tee off and led most of the way. Sharing second place honors was Adam Snyder of Sewickley Academy who sank a 30 foot birdie on the 18th hole and Mike Kondratik of Charleroi. Sixteen of the thirty two golfers qualified for the PIAA Western regional Round at Tom's Run in Blairsville.Chicks Picks – Week 5 – 2015
Welcome to Week 5 of the high school football season. After missing out on last Friday night’s football action due to a scheduling conflict, Chick’s Picks came down with a nasty case of the somethings on Saturday. When this bug continued to wreak havoc for a few days, Chick’s Picks decided it was time to seek help from the good doctor. At the exam, Chick’s Picks began explaining her symptoms to the doc. He seemed as bewildered as she was, unable to pinpoint the cause of the illness. It’s the “halftime is halfway” games this weekend throughout the WPIAL. The WPIAL enters week five with 22 unbeaten teams still intact and striving for perfection. Five are perfect in AAAA, four in AAA, nine in AA and four in A. When we reach halftime at this weekend’s game we will be halfway through the regular season. The weather man says there could be some rain and temperatures this Friday night will drop into the low 50’s or maybe even high 40’s during week five. Will that weather cause footballs and perfect seasons to slip through fingertips? Who will rise and who will fall as we move into October? This could get spooky. On a very rainy Monday evening, the Freedom Bulldogs and Central Valley Warriors girls volleyball teams faced off in a pivotal section matchup and decided to turn the heat up in Section 2-AA. Central Valley entered this mid-season match in 2nd place in the section with a section record of 4-1 (6-1 overall). Freedom entered this match with a record of 3-2 (4-3 overall) good for the middle of the 2-AAA pack. It may have been a non-section, cross-classification match when Class-AA Quaker Valley traveled to Hookstown take on Class-A South Side on Monday night, but it sure had the feel and the outcome of a playoff clash between two top-notch programs. Upper St Clair and Peters Township are two of the most celebrated soccer programs in the WPIAL and every time the two squads do battle with each other, one can expect a classic. Monday night's matchup at USC was no different as the Indians edged the Panthers 2-1. After a bit of a feeling-out process in the early going, the Indians struck first in the 12th minute off of a corner kick. An accidental own goal was scored when the ball ricocheted off a USC defender into the net. WPIAL Alum Q&A – Callie Frey
This week’s edition of WPIAL Alum Q&A highlights Callie Frey, a former championship tennis player for Mount Lebanon High School who is now excelling at the University of Pittsburgh. While at Mount Lebanon, Frey captured four section titles in singles play, and during both her junior and senior seasons, she won the Class AAA WPIAL Championship. September is coming to an end and teams are starting to pull away on the local college football front. Division play opened up in the PSAC, conference play continues in the PAC. The NEC schools have to wait one more week before starting their conference acton. Here are recaps of ALL the games: Seton Hill 41 – Slippery Rock 38 In a game of scores and quick answers, the Griffins dump the #14 Rock at Offutt Field. Christian Strong threw 4 first half touchdown passes for Seton Hill. Sooner or later, the weather will turn cold and nasty, but until then high school football fans can continue to comfortably head out and enjoy the mass production of points being produced by high school football teams throughout the WPIAL. The fourth Saturday of the season featured four football contests, a pair of Class AA Allegheny Conference contests in the afternoon and a Class AA and Class A conference matchup under the lights to close the door on the fourth weekend of play. The fourth Friday of the 2015 WPIAL football season was a night filled with Firsts and Lasts. On the first Friday of Autumn, six teams got off the deck and won their first game of the season including one team winning for the first time in four seasons (more on that later). But without question on this last Friday of September, all of the nights winners are hoping this wont be their last taste of victory in 2015. It’s a Zane-y world out there in WPIAL football so far this season. After the first three weeks of the season, Zane Dudek is atop the WPIAL in rushing yards – and also points scored. Dudek is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound junior running back at Armstrong High School. This is Armstrong’s first year of existence after Ford City and Kittanning merged to form Armstrong. Dudek is certainly bringing some attention to the Riverhawks. Dudek has rushed for 736 yards on 67 carries, an average of 10.9 yards a carry. No other WPIAL running back has 600 yards rushing. Dudek is tied for the scoring lead with Beth-Center’s Tony Welsh at 72 points.
