A WPIAL streak that started more than three decades ago ended quietly Saturday.
For the first time in 32 years, no former WPIAL football players were selected in the NFL Draft. The last time that happened was 1993.
The streak got started when the San Francisco 49ers picked Ringgold’s Anthony Peterson in the fifth round of the 1994 draft. Freeport’s Eric Ravotti, Ford City’s Gus Frerotte, Mt. Lebanon’s Andre Hewitt and Mt. Pleasant’s Rob Holmberg were also chosen that year, and at least one WPIAL alum heard his name called every year since.
This year, however, there were none among the 257 players selected over the seven rounds.
The New York Jets did draft a player one generation removed from the WPIAL by selecting Mason Taylor in the second round Friday. His Pro Football Hall of Fame father, Jason Taylor, played football at Woodland Hills. But Mason Taylor grew up in Florida and attended St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale.
The WPIAL alumni ranked highest on predraft lists was Peters Township graduate Donovan McMillon, a safety who played college football at Florida and Pitt. He signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent Saturday.
The 31-year streak saw more than 80 players drafted from WPIAL schools.
The WPIAL’s highest draft pick since 1994 was North Hills’ LaVar Arrington, who went second overall in 2000 to Washington.
In all, the WPIAL had 19 former players selected in the first or second rounds in that span.
Aliquippa alone had three players go as first-rounders: Ty Law (No. 23 in 1995), Darrelle Revis (No. 14 in 2007) and Jon Baldwin (No. 26 in 2011). Penn Hills’ Aaron Donald (No. 13 in 2014) and New Castle’s Malik Hooker (No. 15 in 2017) also were first-round talents.
There were 13 second-round picks, including three from Woodland Hills: Miles Sanders (2019), Rob Gronkowski (2010) and Shawntae Spencer (2004).
Also drafted in the second round were North Allegheny’s Joey Porter Jr. (2023), Gateway’s Jaquan Brisker (2022), Shady Side Academy’s Skyy Moore (2022), Clairton’s Tyler Boyd (2016), Central Catholic’s Stefen Wisniewski (2011), Hopewell’s Paul Posluszny (2007), Upper St. Clair’s Sean Lee (2010), Aliquippa’s Charles Fisher (1999), Steel Valley’s Charlie Batch (1998) and McKeesport’s Mike Logan (1997).
