So Saturday is your chance to come to Heinz Field and meet the MSA Sports crew. Find the guy who mispronounced your son or daughter’s name and let him have it. Find the guy or girl who left your club out of Big Game Hunting or Chix Picks and let them have it. Find the guy who completely credited someone else with your kid’s touchdown run, or tackle, and let them have it. Find the person who completely messed up the stats and flip-flopped the years when they were talking about your team in the playoff pairings show or on the round table and let them have it! Many times, there is a fine line between advancing to the next round and hanging up the gear for good when you get deep into the postseason, and make no doubt about it, Final Four Friday in the WPIAL Football Playoffs is deep into the postseason. A turnover here, a costly penalty there, or a big block that leads to a big play, it all adds up in November football. Look at Friday night’s WPIAL Semifinals and you see many of the same old faces, like Aliquippa, Woodland Hills and Thomas Jefferson, to just name a few. But there are definitely some new faces mixed in.Penn-Trafford is making its first semifinal appearance since 1997. The Warriors have been to only one WPIAL title game.Neshannock is making its second consecutive semifinal appearance and will play Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. Keeping with tradition, Chick’s Picks stopped by her favorite uptown pizza shop, as she does each football season at this time. In a span of back-to-back postseason Friday nights, we have gone from the Sweet Sixteen in each classification, down to the Elite Eight and now at the halfway point...The Final Four. Some of the performances from the second Friday night in November were flashy and record-setting while others were work-man-like and rock solid. There was a playoff feel to Week 8 Friday night. Yeah, the weather had a lot to do with it on a crisp, clear evening, however the quality of play and the excitement of the action seemed to be ratchet up a notch or two. In a season drenched with blowouts, there were a lot of tight games that prove the postseason is just around the corner. These are the days of spread offenses and pass-happy teams in WPIAL football. It’s not often you see a team average over 300 yards a game on the ground.But in the next two weeks, two of the top games in the WPIAL will match teams that average more than 300 yards a game rushing. It is definitely unusual. And if you think running the football is not important any more, consider that all four of the teams involved in those games enter Week 8 with perfect records.Aliquippa plays at Beaver Falls in a big WPIAL Class AA Midwestern game tonight, matching two teams that average more than 300 yards a game rushing. Welcome to Week 8. Chick’s Picks, like most other Pittsburghers, was honored to witness the success of the Pirates this season. Since she was just a baby prognosticator during the last Pirates postseason appearance, Chick’s Picks cherished every moment this time around, down to the final pitch. We go eclectic here in the penultimate week of the 2013 WPIAL regular season. A pair of teams battling it out for one of the quickly dwindling spots in AAAA, a pair of teams trying to stave off elimination in AAA, a huge rivalry with a division championship on the line in AA, and a non-conference tilt with heavy, high-seeding implications on the line in A.
