It doesn’t take an analytics whiz to figure out that 3-point shooting has become a big part of high school basketball. But if one can deduce anything from the WPIAL championships over the past three days, it is this: While accuracy from 3-point range might be nice, the biggest factor in winning a championship is to hit the boards. Look at the statistics from the 12 boys and girls championships (six in each classification) Thursday through Saturday and rebounding was by far the biggest key and not shooting. Bishop Canevin Lances Neshannock in Girls 3-A Finals
March 4, 2017
For the second time in three years, Bishop Canevin claimed girls basketball championship gold at the Peterson Event Center, this time with a blow out win over #3 seed Neshannock in the Class-3A title game. The top seeded Crusaders scored the first 9 points of the game, before the Lancers finally got their first basket of the game with 3:51 left in the opening quarter.  Shamyjha Price scored 10 points for Bishop Canevin in the 1st quarter, and Sarah Green knocked down two three-pointers to pace the Crusaders to a 21-7 lead after the eight minutes.

2017 WPIAL Competitive Spirit Championship Results
January 7, 2017
Three champions were crowned at the 2017 WPIAL Competitive Spirit Championship on Saturday, as Bishop Canevin in Class A, Elizabeth Forward in AA, and Shaler in AAA took home gold. Hopewell and North Allegheny, both of which claimed first last year, finished as runners-up in AA and AAA, respectively, this year, while there was no runner up in A, as Bishop Canevin was the only squad to compete. In it's fifth year, the event continued to grow in prominence, as the spacious gymnasium at Hempfield Area High School was packed to the brim with spectators and nearly 30 teams.

Chicks Picks for Week Eleven

Welcome to Week 11 of the high school football season. Despite being 11 weeks into the season, Chick’s Picks is still having difficult time adjusting to the six classification system.  At this critical point in the season, Chick’s Picks knew she needed a meeting with the Boss. After a hard day at work, Chick’s Picks stopped by MSA Sports World Headquarters to voice her concerns to the man in charge.  “Boss, I hate to admit it, but I’m lost.  Between the Highway to Heinz and the Road to RMU, I don’t know which way to go,” the prognosticator confessed.

Big Game Hunting for Week Eleven

Call it what you like, redemption Friday, redo Friday, rematch Friday, every single game in the three largest classifications this Friday night is a game that was already played at some point during the regular season. We prefer to call it the semi-finals, and there is no better time to go Big Game Hunting! The suddenness with which the semi-finals jump up on us in 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A is a little unnerving. But hey, we got a new President recently, let’s find out if we are going to get some new champions as well.

Greensburg C.C. Dethrones Bishop Canevin in 1-A Girls Volleyball
November 5, 2016
The Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions claimed their third WPIAL Championship in five years with a commanding 25-14, 25-10 and 25-8 victory over the defending champion Bishop Canevin Crusaders in the Class 1-A Girls Volleyball Championship at Baldwin High School. Greensburg Central Catholic won the title in 2012 and 2014 and fell to the Crusaders in the semifinals last year. The Centurions used their senior leaders to grab the gold medal. 6-2 middle hitter Mikayla Bisignani and 5-8 right side hitter Taylor Obusek, both dominated the match from the service line to lead GCC to the gold.

MSA Sports Friday Night HighLights for Week Nine

Various things were at stake around the WPIAL gridirons on the final Friday of October and the regular season. There were conference championships to be won, home field advantage in the opening round to be signed, sealed and delivered, and of course there were teams just trying to clinch a ride on The Highway to Heinz OR The Road to RMU. MSA Sports Saturdays Scholastic Starz for Week Eight

Rain that made Friday night in Week eight interesting carried over into Saturday afternoon, making for a slow track at four of the five 'natural surface' sites around the WPIAL as grassy fields soon turned muddy and clean uniforms were not so much. But the late Autumn weather conditions made the afternoons and evening for these five standouts really stand out as we put a bow on the next to the last weekend of regular season high school football. Bishop Canevin Hometown Volleyball Broadcast Recap
October 19, 2016
Tuesday night brought forth an incredibly emotional and hard fought volleyball match as the undefeated Fort Cherry Rangers traveled to Bishop Canevin to take on the Crusaders. Bishop Canevin came into the match at 11-1 in the section, with their only loss coming earlier in the year at Fort Cherry, where they were swept 3-0 in straight sets. Things turned out quite differently on Tuesday as Bishop Canevin rallied behind it’s home crowd and took down the Rangers in 5 exciting sets 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 17-25, 15-9)
