Bishop Canevin Wins Second WPIAL A Volleyball Title in Three Years

The Cardiac Crusaders came from behind yet again and won a five set match to win the 2015 WPIAL Class A Championship, defeating Shenango 23-25, 25-23, 25-13, 23-25,15-9. Bishop Canevin jumped to an early 13-5 lead in the first set, but the Wildcats responded with nine unanswered points to take a 14-13 lead. Elizabeth Quahliero had three of her team-high five service aces in the run. A back-and-forth battle finished with Shenango scoring three if the last four points in the set to draw first blood in the match.Chicks Picks – Week 10 – 2015

Welcome to Week 10 of the high school football season. As a veteran prognosticator, Chick’s Picks has received countless commendations over the years. None of these honors, however, were quite as prestigious as the one earned this week. Chick’s Picks received an anonymous phone call early Sunday morning. The caller, a woman, told Chick’s Picks that her presence was requested by The Committee on Monday afternoon. Confused, Chick’s Picks inquired further as to which committee the woman was referring. The woman simply said, “Report to the Double Tree Hotel in Greentree at noon tomorrow. Bring your crystal ball. All of your questions will be answered there.”WPIAL Big Game Hunting – First Round
The Highway to Heinz begins this week, a very exciting time in southwestern Pennsylvania and at the MSA Sports Network. We have been stretched to the max by the fall championship season but with one final tug we found a way to carry every single WPIAL football playoff game yet again. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Most years I fall in love with 8 v 9 games, but this year was different for me. Looking through the brackets I found myself most fascinated by three of the 7 v 10 games. While we prepare to tip our cap on Saturday Starz for the final time this season (except for the four title games at Heinz Field, this year on a Saturday), we remember an old school house of thrills that will likely be no more following Saturday's game. We likely say goodbye to Historic Graham Field in Wilkinsburg as the Tigers prepare to merge with City League Westinghouse. The old grandstand has many thrilling tales to tell, including being the home to the WPIAL football finals way back in the day. it was a proper send off to a field that has hosted many a one-sided blowouts in recent years was the home to a competitive dandy on its final Saturday afternoon of varsity high school football action. Welcome to Week 8 of the high school football season. This week, we officially made it to the future. Wednesday, October 21, 2015 marked the date when Marty McFly and Doctor Emmett Brown traveled into the future in Back to the Future Part II. Week Eight arrives and we can smell the playoffs now. The post season party is just around the corner at the MSA World Headquarters, in fact pairings shows and medals are already making their appearances. But football is the biggie, the one where everyone shows up and Chix Picks prepares the fresh sushi bar. The Football pairing show is always likely to trigger a Schaasy and Mike Azadian argument about schools from Lawrence County versus schools from Allegheny County. Usually we have two people per classification and there is just enough sushi and just the right amount of seats to avoid problems. Next year though, six classifications for the first time, THAT could be a disaster at headquarters. What began as a seemingly meaningless non-class matchup between two of the top programs in class AA and A in girls volleyball turned into a fight to the finish between #3 Montour and #7 Bishop Canevin. Bishop Canevin returned to its winning ways 3-2 with a decisive final set victory 15-6 after Montour had won the third and fourth sets. Bishop Canevin carried a perfect record through the month of September, but as the calendar turned, the Crusaders dropped two of their first three section matches to Serra Catholic and Vincentian Academy. BC appeared ready, focused, and into the game as if it were a section contest and was able to jump out and take the first set relatively handily 25-16.WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz – Week Six

Friday night from Week 6 around the WPIAL featured a plethora of big games. The sixth Saturday of the 2015 campaign saw a smorgasbord of District 7 gridiron action. A taste of high school football with teams from all FOUR classifications made up the busiest Saturday of the season with six football contests. McKeesport, Moon, Burgettstown and Freedom picked a postcard perfect day to celebrate Homecoming 2015. But who was wearing the crown at the end of the day for top performances? In a highly anticipated and dramatic contest, Serra Catholic and Bishop Canevin once again faced each other atop the hard court. To recent memory over the past few seasons, it had been the home Crusaders who have dominated play over the Eagles, but Monday was a different story. Serra Catholic won this matchup on BC’s home floor in just four games. Both teams came in at 6-1 overall in the section. Serra’s only loss prior to this had been Bishop Canevin early on this season. Canevin on the other hand had seen itself lose the game prior to this one at Vincentian and could not find a way to rebound from that tonight.WPIAL Big Game Hunting – Week Five – 09/30/2015

It’s the “halftime is halfway” games this weekend throughout the WPIAL. The WPIAL enters week five with 22 unbeaten teams still intact and striving for perfection. Five are perfect in AAAA, four in AAA, nine in AA and four in A. When we reach halftime at this weekend’s game we will be halfway through the regular season. The weather man says there could be some rain and temperatures this Friday night will drop into the low 50’s or maybe even high 40’s during week five. Will that weather cause footballs and perfect seasons to slip through fingertips? Who will rise and who will fall as we move into October? This could get spooky. Don’t worry, take my hand, I’ve got a flashlight ; I’ve got an umbrella, we’re all set to go Big Game Hunting.
