Ever since George Yokitis became Vincentian’s boys basketball coach in the 2008-09 season, he has tried to have his teams play an up-tempo, full-court style. The Royals press, trap all over the court and try to keep the tempo at a fast pace on offense. But the style has never created scoring like this year. Vincentian Academy is undefeated and scoring at a pace that is rarely seen around the WPIAL. The Royals are averaging 92.1 points a game and have scored 90 points or more seven times. You can say that it’s easier to play this way in Class A. And yes, Vincentian plays on a small court, which makes it easier to score more and trap more defensively. I’m on the Highway to Heinz, the Highway to Heinz, with apologies to AC/DC there will in fact be stop signs. In fact 32 teams will get off this Friday night after the shortest trip imaginable on the Highway to Heinz. But for those naysayers who claim there are too many teams in the playoffs, I dare you to ask any member of those 32 teams if they would give back the memory of making the playoffs even after getting dumped in round one, the answer is no, they would not. In fact, they would do it all again even knowing the heartbreak was coming right at them. That’s why the playoffs in the WPIAL are perfect just the way they are. Friday night in Week Nine. One last chance for ALL of the teams around the WPIAL to shine. Some will move on to the Highway to Heinz in the hopes of making this a lucky 13th season in the 21st century. Others who will not move on just wanted to close out the campaign on a high note. Although much has already been decided week nine of the 2013 WPIAL football season brings us all the sweetness you might expect with regard to conference championship tilts. It also has a fair share of win and you are in games. It also has some games that will have a huge impact come seeding time for the football steering committee. Only three games were on the docket on the third Saturday of October, but all had some sort of playoff implication...one team trying to clinch a spot, one team trying to control its own destiny and a playoff bound team trying to improve seeding. The Brentwood Spartans Girls' Volleyball team came into their matchup with the Serra Catholic Eagles tied for 3rd place in Class A Section 2 with Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic at 4-3. The Eagles have run over all of their competition en route to a perfect 7-0 record in the section. The first meeting between these two teams resulted in a 3-0 win for the Eagles back on September 11 in McKeesport. Even thought the venue for this matchup was different, the result was just the same as Sera Catholic continued to demonstrate their continuity throughout the floor thanks to the service games of Melanie Mills,Gabriella Piccolino, Erin Thomas, and Michelle Alfer, and the killing abilities of freshman Lauren Kolenik and senior Christina Pici.WPIAL Friday Night HighLights for Week Five

It was a clean sweep for the month of September weather wise as for the fourth straight Friday and the fifth overall, the weather was outstanding for high school football around Western Pennsylvania. The Lady Spartans are heading in the right direction this year as they prepare for solid section play against big hitting schools Vincentian Academy, North Catholic and Serra Catholic.The squad is well balanced between veterans and inexperience. The good start to the 2013 girls volleyball season continued for the Brentwood Spartans as they defeated the Wilkinsburg Tigers (3-0) at Brentwood High School to improve to (2-0) on the season.Brentwood used a couple of runs in the first two games of the match to win each by identical scores of 25-11. Game 1 was tied at 1-1 before the Spartans rattled off 9 of the next 10 points to take control.Wilkinsburg’s only lead of the match came in game 2, when the Tigers took a 6-4 advantage. But after a Brentwood timeout and the Spartans and Tigers tied at 7-all, Brentwood scored the game’s next 13-points to secure the win.
