Stretch Run high school football action continued with another busy Friday in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Today we focus not just on the biggest numbers put up on the Eighth Friday of this 2012 campaign, but on those top outings in games with big stakes...some ended long postseason droughts while others kept their team alive to fight another week or sealed the deal on one of the top spots in their conference. Her crystal ball is usually still a bit cloudy from the off-season, making it difficult to foresee accurate picks. Week One was a scorcher, we saw some big time upsets, some tremendous debuts, and some confirmations of things most of us suspected would be true for the 2012 campaign. One thing I think all of us non-head coaches can agree on, is that WPIAL realignment bringing us very meaningful games at the outset of the season is a huge success. The Black Hills Conference already was pretty good. But after the WPIAL’s realignment of conferences for this season, the Hills are alive even more. A few changes to the Black Hills made it a 10-team conference – and also made it stronger. One of the conference’s new members is Bishop Canevin, a team that is always more than competitive. Coach Bob Jacoby’s team was 11-1 last year and made the WPIAL semifinals. Monessen, which always has some talented players, moved into the Black Hills from the Tri-County South. California and Imani Christian also are new additions to the league.
