It doesn't matter whether it's McKenna or Madison. These Lampes have lit up opposing pitchers. McKenna and Madison Lampe are twin sisters and sophomores on the West Greene softball team. You might have a hard time coming up with any WPIAL softball sisters over the years that have made such a big impact on offense at the same time. The Lampes helped West Greene win a second consecutive WPIAL softball title on Thursday. The school had never won a championship in another sport. Mckenna Lampe was 2 for 3 in the title game and is now batting a whopping .662. A center fielder, McKenna's most amazing statistic might be the 44 bases she has stolen this season. Meanwhile, Madison Lampe, a sophomore third baseman, is batting .597. She has stolen 21 bases.Scholastic Notebook – 04/08/2017

A star hurdler is emerging in girls track and field at Oakland Catholic, but the last time we heard much of her, she was at Penn Hills. Jayla Ellis is a sophomore at Oakland Catholic who has run the 100-meter hurdles in 14.1 seconds this spring. According to WPIAL girls track and field historian Jim Faiella, that is the second-fastest time in the history of the WPIAL. Lindsay Dolan of Center ran 14.1 in 2006. Ellis burst onto the WPIAL track scene a year ago, winning the 100 hurdles as a freshman and finishing fourth in the state. But Ellis attended Penn Hills last year. She transferred to Oakland Catholic for her sophomore year.
Pine-Richland Beats Butler for 3rd Time, Repeats as WPIAL Champs

For the second time in as many years, the Pine Richland Rams boys took gold in the WPIAL’s highest classification. The Rams used a late 11-2 run in the 4th quarter to pull away from the Butler Golden Tornado and win the 6-A Championship, 72-61. It was the third time in as many tries that Pine Richland defeated their Section 1 foe. The Rams had to defeat North Hills a third time in the 6-A semifinals to even make it to the championship game.

When the WPIAL made conferences for the new 6A classification, a big questions was where to put Pittsburgh Central Catholic? Competitive balance apparently wasn’t an issue for the WPIAL. The WPIAL bosses put Central Catholic in the Northern Seven Conference – and essentially made the Northern Seven much stronger than the other 6A Conference (Southeastern). Central Catholic has played in the northern suburban conference before, but the WPIAL also put Penn Hills – an east suburban school – into the Northern Seven. There were many who thought Central Catholic would be placed in the Southeastern to balance the competitiveness. With Central Catholic in the Northern Seven, that conference now appears to be much stronger - top to bottom - than the Southeastern.Scholastic Notebook – 06/12/2016

Remember back two years ago when Blackhawk pitcher Brendan McKay’s scoreless streak was one of the biggest stories ever in WPIAL high school baseball? Well, the scoreless streak of Mike Boswell isn’t close to McKay’s, but Boswell’s also belongs as one of the most impressive in WPIAL history. Boswell is a 6-foot, 190-pound senior at Riverside who has played a huge role in getting the Panthers to the PIAA Class AA semifinals tomorrow [Monday]. He has not given up a run in four postseason victories and his scoreless streak, going back to the regular season, now stands at 41 innings.
