Remember back two years ago when Blackhawk pitcher Brendan McKay’s scoreless streak was one of the biggest stories ever in WPIAL high school baseball? Well, the scoreless streak of Mike Boswell isn’t close to McKay’s, but Boswell’s also belongs as one of the most impressive in WPIAL history. Boswell is a 6-foot, 190-pound senior at Riverside who has played a huge role in getting the Panthers to the PIAA Class AA semifinals tomorrow [Monday]. He has not given up a run in four postseason victories and his scoreless streak, going back to the regular season, now stands at 41 innings. McKay’s streak was 72 1/3 innings, which tied for the second-longest in U.S. high school baseball history.PIHL Noteboook – MSA SPORTS ALL-ICERS TEAM

In a rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class AAA Quarterfinals matchup in which Butler upset Seneca Valley, the Raiders found some revenge and helped solidify their No. 1 ranking in AAA by shutting out the Golden Tornado, 2-0.
CTK 2015 – Class AAAA Northern Eight Conference Preview

A team from the Northern Eight Conference has won the WPIAL Class AAAA championship five consecutive seasons, and last year’s title game was a matchup of two Northern Eight teams – Pine-Richland and Central Catholic. The conference should be formidable again this season. Many are pegging the Northern Eight to have three of the top six or seven teams in Class AAAA – Pittsburgh Central Catholic, North Allegheny and Pine-Richland.

Sometimes the most unlikely heroes are found in championship games and the Class AAA PIHL Championship game was no exception. Penn State football coach James Franklin lost out on the top player in the WPIAL class of 2015 when Central Valley’s Jordan Whitehead signed with Pitt. Other than Whitehead, Penn State had plenty of success in the WPIAL. At least more than the Nittany Lions have had in recent history. Penn State signed four players from the WPIAL this season. That might not seem like a lot, but it is more than the past four classes combined. In fact, only twice in the past 10 years has Penn State landed four or more players from the WPIAL. In 2010, Penn State signed five WPIAL players and four in 2007. Two of the past four years, Penn State did not sign one WPIAL player.PIHL Notebook – 2014-2015 Class AAA Preview

Welcome to “PIHL Notebook” and our annual season preview. Over the next four Monday’s, we will provide thumbnail sketches of all 63 PIHL teams to make sure local high school hockey fans are ready when the puck drops…tonight! And, oh, by the way, we will have exclusive coverage, both audio AND video, of the opening night doubleheader from the RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island. In Hometown Volleyball action at Avonworth High School, the home standing Antelopes lost to the Butler Golden Tornados in a non section game by a 3-0 match score. Avonworth with only four seniors, and 3 juniors is a very young team and it showed on the court Monday night. Avonworth led 1-0 in game one and the match was close thru ten points at 5-5. But the Tornado's took over from there jumping out to a 16-8 lead. The Antelopes would come back and cut the lead to 19-14 with inspired play, but Butler was too strong and finished off the game scoring six of the last 10 points to win 25-18.WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz for 9/20

For the second and final time this season, a WPIAL Class Quad-A game slipped into the Saturday schedule as the annual homecoming game at Shaler joined a list of three of the 'regulars' hosting Saturday afternoon high school football. While overcast skies replaced brilliant sunshine in the second half of these four contests, these players continued to shine bright al afternoon long. Here at MSA Sports, we like to spread the wealth when it comes to shining our spotlight. It seems some players shine for top teams each and every week. Sure, we will acknowledge their greatness, but we also like to tip our cap to those players and teams that are not steady contributors in each week to the 'W' column around the WPIAL.
