On a night lacking a lot of marque punch with only one game involving Top 10 teams going head-to-head, five teams rose from the deck to turn an 0-3 record to a 1-3 mark with their first taste of victory in 2012. The Black Hills Conference already was pretty good. But after the WPIAL’s realignment of conferences for this season, the Hills are alive even more. A few changes to the Black Hills made it a 10-team conference – and also made it stronger. One of the conference’s new members is Bishop Canevin, a team that is always more than competitive. Coach Bob Jacoby’s team was 11-1 last year and made the WPIAL semifinals. Monessen, which always has some talented players, moved into the Black Hills from the Tri-County South. California and Imani Christian also are new additions to the league. In dedication to Clairton's school colors, maybe they should change the name of this Class A section to the Black AND Orange Hills Conference. Over the last 35 years, the WPIAL Class A football scene has been dominated by two conferences, the Big 7 and the Eastern Conference. From 1975 through 2006, the districts champion came from one of those two conferences. A pair of legends hung up the whistle this off season with George Smith of McKeesport and Guy Montecalvo of Canon-McMillan calling it quits...for now. Meanwhile, a couple of big name coaches have resurfaced in Jim Rankin and Art Tragesser while Ray Braszo is going back to the future.
