WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz – Week Three

An early homecoming game expanded the schedule of Saturday afternoon games to four to close out Week Three. When all was said and done on the third Saturday of the season, two teams remained undefeated, two teams picked up their first victory of the season and while four teams remain winless, one continues a losing streak that is inching close to four straight years. Here are the players who shined bright on an afternoon that went from sunny to stormy in the blink of an eye. Jo-El Shaw - Woodland Hills

At Chartiers Houston High School on Thursday, the Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers defeated the Bentworth Bearcats in a Hometown Girls Volleyball match 3-0. All three games were close with scores of 26-24, 26-24, and 27-25. Chartiers-Houston did not play well early in game one with unforced errors and bad defense. They trailed most of the game but down 16-10 found their game. They would tie it at 18-18, but the Bearcats would lead at 23-19. The Bucs would score 7 of the next 8 points to win 26-24. CTK 2015 – Class A Black Hills Conference Preview
August 28, 2015
The Hills have been alive the past two years. In 2014 and 2013, the a team from the current Black Hills Conference has made it at least to the WPIAL championship game. It was Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in 2013 (then in Class A's Eastern Conference) and Avonworth last year. North Catholic won the title in 2013 and also the PIAA title, while Avonworth lost to Clairton in last year’s WPIAL final. Will the championship-caliber play continue this year? Possibly. Clairton is everyone’s team to beat in Class A, but North Catholic and Avonworth are considered two of the best teams again. Brentwood also looks like it has the makings of a team that could challenge for the top of the conference. Here is a look at the Black Hills Conference:

Hometown Softball Recap for Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers – 04/25/2015
April 25, 2015
It's a shame one of these two teams had to lose. Both pitchers for Chartiers-Houston and Jefferson-Morgan pitched a gem, but it was the Rockets who walked away with the W in a tight Section 1 A softball game. Senior Megan Kraushaar lead off for the Bucaneers, making contact with one of Maddie Ludrosky's pitches, flying out to right field. She would be the only batter to make contact until she was up again in the 4th inning, as Ludrosky struck out the next 8 straight in the lineup.

Scholastic Notebook – 03/13/2015
March 13, 2015
This is the time of year in basketball where coaches often look to their seniors or experienced players for leadership and to make key plays in playoff games. But for a few teams in the WPIAL, “fresh” faces can be seen on the court. The New Castle and Mars boys, and also the Chartiers-Houston girls have made it to the PIAA quarterfinals and freshmen have fueled their runs. * For New Castle, 6-foot freshman forward Marcus Hooker is averaging 10 points and seven rebounds a game for a team that will play Archbishop Carroll tonight in the Class AAA elite eight. Hooker is the younger brother of Malik Hooker, a former New Castle star who is now a freshman football player at Ohio State. Marcus also plays football.

Scholastic Notebook – 01/09/2015

New Castle High School’s Malik Hooker apparently isn’t the only one who wears the athletic “genes” in the family. Hooker was one of the best two-sport athletes in the state the past two years, standing out in football and basketball. He now is a freshman football player at Ohio State, but is being redshirted this year. Two of Hooker’s younger brothers are now playing on the New Castle basketball. One of them is the team’s leading scorer in his first year as a starter. Marquel Hooker, a 5-foot-10 junior, is averaging 16.4 points a game. He never saw regular varsity time before this season.

Scholastic Notebook – 10/31/2014
October 31, 2014
The Southmoreland football team failed to make the WPIAL football postseason again. The Scotties haven’t been to the playoffs since 1979, the longest current drought in the WPIAL. But there are some other playoff droughts that are notable as the WPIAL playoffs get under way Friday with 32 games around the area. Three teams in the postseason have never won a WPIAL playoff game. Never, ever, ever. They are Laurel Highlands, Mapletown and Altoona. Altoona is a little deceiving. The school re-joined the WPIAL for football only a few years ago. But the school played in the WPIAL a long time ago. Altoona has played in only two previous WPIAL playoff games. The last was in 2012. The first was in 1969 when Altoona lost to Gateway in the WPIAL final.
