WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz – Week One

What better way to conclude opening weekend of the 2012 high school football season than for the WPIAL to put on a massive light show spectacular on Saturday night. Wait, what's that? It wasn't District 7 officials, rather Mother Nature that took center stage? Mmmm. Freeport and Shady Side Academy tied for the conference championship two of the past three seasons. This year could be more of the same. Many are pegging Freeport and Shady Side Academy as the teams to beat this year. Both teams are experienced and have some talented players. But Burrell and Ford City can’t be overlooked. The Allegheny Conference changed a little this season. Apollo-Ridge and West Shamokin both dropped out of the conference and moved down to the Class A Eastern Conference. That should help West Shamokin, which hasn’t won a game since the 2007 season.Scholastic Notebook – 12/02/2011

If you look back at what made this a WPIAL championship season for the Montour football team, there were a number of factors. South Fayette enjoyed a breakout season in 2009. They went undefeated in the regular season and captured the Class AA Century Conference championship. However their season came to a bitter end in a wild shootout loss to Aliquippa in the WPIAL Quarterfinals.
