New Castle was a good 3-point shooting team in the regular season. But the Red Hurricanes’ marksmanship has even improved in the postseason, and is it any wonder New Castle hasn’t lost a playoff game? New Castle won the WPIAL Class 4A championship and romped past Sharon in the first round of the PIAA playoffs. New Castle has averaged nine made 3-pointers a game in four postseason games and coach Ralph Blundo’s team is shooting 43 percent behind the arc in playoff games. That is excellent for any team, let alone a high school team. New Castle made 11, 9 and 10 3-pointers in three WPIAL playoff games, and then made 7 of 22 against Sharon in the first round of the playoffs.

With schools either electing to move up or just taking the jump in class, what could be a new super conference in Class AAA was formed. The Parkway may be no more but the Beaver Valley Conference might rival the Parkway in toughness. With only 3 AAA conferences and just 8 teams making the playoffs, it means that there will be at least 1, if not 2 or more teams that deserve to make the playoffs, now will not qualify for the post-season. Pitchers can dominate the sport of softball. But this year’s Diamond Dolls all-star team is led by pitchers who also were big factors as hitters. The Diamond Dolls is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position, and is picked by the MSA Sports staff. Pitchers like Hempfield’s Morgan Ryan, Shaler’s Bri Dobson and West Greene’s Madison also had huge impacts as hitters and led their teams to highly successful seasons. All four WPIAL champions have a player on the Diamond Dolls team. Youth also is served on this team as it includes four sophomores. Here is a look at the Diamond Dolls team. Unlike the district baseball playoffs where none of the top-seeds prevailed in the end, the favorites took home the gold in three of the four classifications. Hempfield repeated in Class AAAA, while undefeated Ellwood City won gold in Class AA and once beaten West Greene won their first ever Class A crown. The lone exception was in Class AAA, where 12th-seed Mount Pleasant was more than happy to play the role of Cinderella en route to their first ever district softball championship. The WPIAL softball championships have a trio of new faces this year. The championships will be played Friday at California University of Pa.’s Lilly Field and three of the eight participants have never been so close to WPIAL gold medals. Mount Pleasant, West Allegheny and West Greene are all making their first appearances in a championship game. Meanwhile, Hempfield, Baldwin, Ellwood City, South Park and Chartiers-Houston have all won at least one championship before. The games were rained out Thursday and rescheduled for Friday. CTK 2015 – Class AA Midwestern Athletic Conference

Often referred to as the MAC, it is an acronym for the Midwestern Athletic Conference. Maybe it should stand for Mighty Aliquippa Continues. The Quips have absolutely dominated the MAC this decade. Since 2010, Aliquippa has won five straight outright conference championships and has been rarely challenged in section going a staggering 38-0. Even when they lose star players to graduation, there is another young stud waiting in the wings to dawn the black and red and continue the tradition. But there are eight other MAC teams who feel the conference could stand for Maybe Aliquippa Can’t. Is that false hope in the dawning of a new season, or is there a Tiger or other cat of a different stripe ready to pounce and shock the Quips and the rest of the WPIAL nation?Scholastic Notebook – 04/17/2015

Life in Section 1 of WPIAL Class AAAA baseball is full of close calls. The WPIAL season is a little less than a month old and it’s remarkable how many close games there are in Section 1. Heading into Friday’s action, there have been 12 games played in the section. Two-thirds were decided by two runs or less and five had been decided by one run. The close games certainly reflect the balance of the section. But they also reflect the strength of the section. This should tell you the strength of Section 1: It includes four teams – Moon, North Allegheny, Pine-Richland and Seneca Valley – that have made 17 WPIAL championship appearances in either Class AAAA or AAA over the past 11 years. Maybe you’ve heard the quote “Down goes Frazier, Down goes Frazier.” It is a line from legendary sports announcer Howard Cosell, describing boxer Joe Frazier after he went down from a George Foreman punch in a famous 1973 bout. In WPIAL football this year, it is “Up goes Frazier, Up goes Frazier.” Things haven’t been this good in Perryopolis (where Frazier is located) since 10 years after that Frazier-Foreman fight. The Frazier Commodores are 5-0 and have a showdown tonight with Beth-Center for first place in the Tri-County South Conference. The winner likely will win the Tri-County South title. Frazier has not started a season 5-0 since 1983, when the school made it all the way to the WPIAL Class A championship game before losing to Western Beaver.WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz for 8/30

Saturday football continues to become more rare with each passing school year. Now that Geibel Catholic is not fielding a team this season (moment of silence), the WPIAL now only has four schools that play a majority of their home games on Saturday afternoon: Summit Academy, Wilkinsburg, Riverview & Western Beaver. But that doesn't mean good things don't happen the day after Friday night lights. Here are the top five performances from a rather busy first Saturday of 2014. 2013 was another great season in the Midwestern Athletic Conference as Aliquippa made their sixth straight trip to Heinz Field. Overall, the Quips have won three titles in that time and fifteen overall. Beaver and Beaver Falls also had outstanding seasons, again making the trip on the Highway to Heinz. Also qualifying for the first time since 2003 were the New Brighton Lions. 2014 should prove to be a good season as well. The MAC gets some new members as Laurel rejoins the conference and the Summit Academy moves in from the Allegheny.
