Neither players or coaches can complain about the weather in the first four weeks of this season as Mother Nature has cooperated very nicely. And the turned toward huge offensive numbers continued around fields in Southwestern Pennsylvania on the fourth Friday of the WPIAL football season. Thus it makes our job that much tougher with so many young men who deserve post-game kudos, only a few can receive our top ten tip of the cap. Look at the makeup of the Black Hills Conference and the name doesn’t seem to fit any more. With the WPIAL’s realignment for this year, the Black Hills changed drastically. A name like the old Ohio Valley Conference might have been more appropriate. But some of the coaches in this conference let it be known that they still wanted to be called the Black Hills. So, Black Hills it is By any name, this conference figures to be highly competitive. Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, the defending WPIAL and PIAA champ, is everyone’s team to beat. Welcome to Week 10. As yet another high school football season begins to wind down, Chick’s Picks spent some time with Team MSA Sports simply reflecting on her tenure at the network. She shared her stories with the team, from her first day as an intern many moons ago, to her first venture in prognosticating.One of the network’s newer members, who shall remain nameless, seemed preoccupied during the team’s storytelling session. Unable to make sense of this reaction, Chick’s Picks said, “Young man, are we boring you with this MSA Sports history lesson?” He responded, “Chick’s Picks, it’s just that I was only two years old when you started working here. Welcome to Week 9. After nearly a decade of dominating fantasy football leagues, Chick’s Picks decided to throw her hat into fantasy hockey, hoping for at least a bit of a challenge. While her league mates spent weeks researching and preparing for the draft, Chick’s Picks sat back and chuckled, knowing her prized crystal ball was the only research she needed.Draft day was finally here. Chick’s Picks packed up her crystal ball and headed to meet the gang at league headquarters. It was no surprise to see the gaggle of league mates in line awaiting her autograph when she arrived. Crazy...kooky...strange...horror. Those are all word that are usually associated with Friday the 13th. With a chill in the air, those words came to life on the football fields around Southwestern Pennsylvania with some strange results and some serious injuries. Football is a copycat sport. If somebody has success at any level, it seems to filter up and done as fads and tendencies come and go. For years many teams have wanted to emulate the Baltimore Ravens defense. After the Ravens D’s performance in the NFL season opener on Sunday, it seems many WPIAL football teams can now say mission accomplished after a night of high scoring with points a plenty. The curtain lifted on the First Friday of the 2013 WPIAL football season with plenty of tightness. Yeah, there was the pressure of playing conference games right out of the gates, but tight muscles and cramps were everywhere on a humid end to what has been a pleasant month of August. Any discussion of the race in the Class A Black Hills must start with Clairton. The Bears come into the season on a 63-game winning streak, the longest current streak in the country and the longest in the history of Pennsylvania. Clairton lost a number of key players to graduation. So do the Bears simply reload? Do they step a back? Is this finally the year the streak ends? Questions abound about the Bears. For sure, they are good enough to win a conference title again and maybe a sixth consecutive WPIAL and fifth consecutive PIAA. Maybe Brentwood or Monessen are ready to give a serious challenge to Clairton.
